A welding method for two members adapted to be welded and formed of a low-alloy steel for structural purposes causing the weld metal to develop martensite transformation during cooling after welding, so that the weld metal becomes expanded to a greater degree at room temperature than at a temperature at which the martensite transformation initiates. The welding material comprises a ferrous alloy containing C, Cr, Ni, Si, Mn, Mo and Nb, all of which meet substantially with the contents of the following equation (1): ##EQU1##

The invention provides a novel polymer comprising a recurring unit of formula (1) wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or acid labile group, at least one R.sup.2 being hydrogen and at least one R.sup.2 being an acid labile group, and n=2 or 3. The polymer's Mw is 3,000-300,000. Blending the polymer as a base resin with an organic solvent and a photoacid generator yields a chemically amplified positive resist composition. ##STR1##

The system for supplying information to a terminal device or devices has one or more optical disk drives, a magnetic disk storage for storing information regarding a beginning portion of the information recorded on the optical disk or disks, one or more optical disk monitoring circuits, an electronic switch assembly for selectively outputting one of the stored information from the magnetic disk storage and the readout information from the optical disk drive, one or more FIFO memories for temporarily holding and outputting information from the electronic switch assembly, and a controller which causes the electronic switch assembly to output the stored information from the magnetic disk storage in response to the playback request input, and subsequently causes the electronic switch assembly to output the readout information from the optical disk drive in response to the signal from the optical disk monitoring circuit so that the FIFO memory outputs continuous information.

A frequency converter includes: a signal synthesizer element for inputting first and second input signals to synthesize these signals and for outputting a synthesized signal, from which noises even times as large as the frequency of the second input signal are removed; an amplitude limitation amplifier element, composed of a differential amplifier circuit, for amplifying the synthesized signal outputted from the signal synthesizer element to output an amplified signal having a constant amplitude; and a filter for inputting the amplified signal outputted from the amplitude limitation amplifier element, to remove an unnecessary signal component to produce an output a baseband signal including only a desired signal component. In addition, a radio receiver using the frequency converter of such a construction is designed to input the output of a local oscillator to a variable attenuator or a variable gain amplifier, to input the output of the variable attenuator or the variable gain amplifier as the first input signal to the frequency converter so as to perform the gain control. Thus, not only is self-mixing, a common problem in direct conversion receivers, prevented, but also, because a smaller local oscillation driving signal is required, power consumption is significantly reduced.

A waveguide device having a waveguide layer provided with a core and a cladding, and having a mode filter function of propagating either of TE mode polarized light and TM mode polarized light, wherein the core and the cladding are formed of a variable anisotropic refractive index material or a material in which a variable anisotropic refractive index material is dispersed in a matrix. Upon photoirradiation, the refractive indices (n.sub.o, n.sub.e) of the core and the cladding can be changed to satisfy the formulae: one of n.sub.o and n.sub.e of the core is greater than that of the cladding, and the other of n.sub.o and n.sub.e of the core is less than or equal to that of the cladding, wherein n.sub.o is the ordinary refractive index and n.sub.e is the extraordinary refractive index. This waveguide device can be an important constitutional component in a compact optical system. A method of producing the waveguide device is also disclosed.

A hydraulic power steering apparatus includes a pump for discharging pressurized operation fluid, a power cylinder for generating assisting force, a control valve connected to the pump via a fluid path for receiving the operation fluid from the pump and adapted to supply the operation fluid to the power cylinder in accordance with operation of a steering wheel, a rubber hose disposed in the fluid path. A check valve is disposed between the rubber hose and the control valve. Since reverse flow of the operation fluid due to input of kick-back force is prevented, tires to be steered are prevented from undesirably steered against the driver's intention. Further, a pressure relieving mechanism is provided to relieve part of the operation fluid when the check valve operates. Therefore, the oil pressure within the power cylinder and the control valve is prevented from increasing excessively, so that the oil pressure within the pump does not reach a preset relief pressure.
