    Abstract: A wireless communication system based on a directional speaker is disclosed. The system can include an interface unit and a base unit. The audio signals from the speaker can be generated by transforming ultrasonic signals in air. This allows the production of directional audio signals even when the aperture of the speaker has dimensions in the order of a few centimeters. The audio signals from the speaker can be heard hands-free. Further, privacy protection is enhanced. In one embodiment, the interface unit can be attached or integrated to a piece of clothing at the shoulder of the user, with the audio signals from the speaker directed towards one of the user's ears. The wireless communication system can be applied to a number of different areas, including a communication device, such as a cell phone; a hearing aid; an entertainment system; and a computation system, such as a personal digital assistant or a computer. The wireless communication system can be personalized to the hearing characteristics of the user, or to the ambient noise level of the environment.

    Abstract: A personal voice-transmitted device includes at least one voice box and at least one voice-transmitted tube. The voice box has a speaker arranged therein, and is divided to a first space and a second space by the speaker. The voice-transmitted tube connects to one side of the voice box and extends outwardly and has an outlet. The device can generate and retain a low-pitched tone by resonance of the first space, and the low-pitched tone can be transmitted to the outside by the voice-transmitted tube to form an excellent low-pitched tone. The drawbacks of the prior art such as poor tone because of using an earphone, a shutting stress and an uncomfortable feeling because of inserting an earphone, an unsafe feeling because of hanging an earphone and a sanitation problem because of contacting an earphone can be improved. The device can be used with no restriction on occasions and time.

    Abstract: Apparatus, systems and methods are provided for a planetary suit audio system that allows a suited occupant to acoustically interact, using three dimensional surround sound and directional accuracy, with and within the ambient surface environment. This is being developed directly for integration into future versions of a Martian surface suit. The hardware and apparatus incorporates a system that requires a low power suit interface, an intelligent digital signal processing (DSP) sound chip, appropriately integrated and tested sound processing Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) algorithms, integrated communications system circuitry, miniaturized electric eternal microphone arrays and speakers, and occupant used internal suit speakers or headsets. It has been found that the pressure at the Martian surface (equivalent to 99,000 feet in altitude on the Earth) supports the appropriate acoustical properties to allow for standard environmental auditory interaction. Exploration of the surface of Mars will require crews to routinely work within the confined spaces of environmental pressure suits during missions lasting as much a 500 days. The use of traditional suits means that operators have to adapt to an internal environment that limits the amount of direct sensory interaction with the external environment. Incorporating external audio capabilities has a major impact of providing the extravehicular activity (EVA) or surface operations crewmember with a second natural means of interacting with, and exploring their environment. This will also make the operating environment more tangible and comfortable for daily operations. Given this apparatus, crews will have the ability to judge actions, environmental conditions, and equipment operations based on auditory inputs, thus promoting increased operational safety and mission success.

    Abstract: A hearing enhancement system that enhances a user's hearing based on a directional speaker is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system can include an interface unit that has a directional speaker and a microphone. The microphone captures input audio signals that are transformed into ultrasonic signals. The speaker transmits the ultrasonic signals, which are transformed into output audio signals by interaction with air. At least a portion of the output audio signals are modified to enhance the hearing of the user. Based on the system, the user's ear remains free from any inserted objects and thus is free from annoying occlusion effects. Compared to existing hearing aids, the system is relatively inexpensive. In another embodiment, the system can also be used as a phone. In yet another embodiment, the system can also access audio signals from other portable or non-portable instruments, wired or wirelessly, such as from home entertainment units, phones, microphones at a conference or speakers at a movie theater.
