Abstract: The orthophosphate electrodes for rechargeable batteries include an anode and a cathode, each formed from an orthophosphate material, for use in a conventional electrolytic cell-type rechargeable battery. The orthophosphate anode is an anode formed from an orthophosphate material having the formula A2T2B(PO4)3, and the orthophosphate cathode is a cathode formed from an orthophosphate material having the formula A3T2B(PO4)3, where A represents an alkali metal and T and B each represent a transition metal. The alkali metal may be lithium (Li) sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), monovalent cations thereof, or combinations thereof and each transition metal may be titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), or combinations thereof. The iron modified montmorillonite can be synthesized using a facile intercalation wet synthesis procedure that requires low energy and minimal use of chemicals. The iron modified montmorillonite adsorbent effectively removes heavy metals, such as arsenite, strontium, barium, phosphate, from water.

Abstract: A system and method for advanced oxidation (10) of treated sewage effluent provide additional treatment to treated sewage effluent (TSE) for reuse thereof. The method includes exposing TSE to ozone and hydrogen peroxide to oxidize contaminants; coagulating remaining waste in the TSE; flocculating the coagulated TSE; holding the flocculated treated sewage effluent in a settling tank for sedimentation; removing coarse suspended particles from the flocculated TSE by filtration after sedimentation; and removing fine suspended particles by ultrafiltration of the TSE after removing the coarse suspended particles. The system includes a chemical mixing tank (16); a homogenizing tank (22); an advanced oxidation process system (24); a rapid mixer; a flocculation tank (28); a sedimentation tank (32); a sand filter (34); and at least one ultrafiltration system (38), (36).

Abstract: The method of making a pyrrolo bisthiazole homopolymer starts with dissolving a dibrominated pyrrolo[3,2-d:4,5-d′]bisthiazole monomer having the formula: where R is an alkyl group, in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (THF). Then, the solvated monomer is treated with 1 equivalent of a Turbo-Grignard reagent complex having the formula iPrMgCl.LiCl at 0° C. to form a reaction mixture. The reaction mixture is stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, and after stirring, the reaction mixture is refluxed for 24 hours. A conjugated homopolymer product having the formula: where n is the number of repeating units of pyrrolo[3,2-d:4,5-d′]bisthiazole, is recovered from the reaction mixture. The PBTz-based homopolymers showed broad absorption from 450 to 850 nm in thin film and excellent photochemical and thermal stability, making the polymers suitable for lightweight, low cost plastic electronic devices.

Abstract: The hybrid desalination system is a desalination system for seawater which uses both filtering and treatment from a reverse osmosis filter system as well as evaporative distillation for the production of potable water. The hybrid desalination system includes a recovery system, which may be a reverse osmosis system, a forward osmosis system, or a combination thereof, for at least partially desalinating a volume of saltwater and outputting a treated fluid. A boiler is in fluid communication with the recovery system for receiving the treated fluid and producing pure water by evaporative desalination. The boiler includes an internal heating coil for passing a heated working fluid therethrough. A collection tank is in communication with to the boiler for receiving the pure water. At least one solar parabolic trough is in fluid communication with the internal heating coil of the boiler for heating the heated working fluid.

Abstract: A method of removing barium from a liquid includes adding a two-dimensional metal carbide water contaminant adsorbent to water to adsorb contaminants, such as barium (II), from the liquid. The two-dimensional metal carbide water contaminant adsorbent is in the form of at least one MXene, having the formula Mn+1Xn, where n=1, 2 or 3, M is an early transition metal, such as scandium (Sc), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), yttrium (Y), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), molybdenum (Mo) or the like, and X is either carbon or nitrogen. The MXene may be Ti3C2. The liquid may be, for example, at least one water by-product from at least one oilfield reservoir, such as produced water, co-produced water or a combination thereof.

Abstract: The anti-diversity concept for secure communication on a two-link compound channel provides secure communication over two parallel communication channels. The message is split into two separate bit sequences by a source splitter. An error correction encoder (110) is applied to the two bit sequences to provide two code words for two channels (122, 124), such that left and right halves of an error correction code matrix respectively corresponds to the two parallel signal channels (122, 124). For the left half of the error correction code matrix, an upper left matrix block is a random permutation matrix, an upper right block is the identity matrix, and the bottom right matrix block is a random matrix of column and row weight greater than or equal to one. The bottom left matrix block is a column permutation of the bottom right, random matrix block. The right half error correction code matrix is a similar, symmetric structure.

Abstract: The method of converting high voltage AC lines into bipolar high voltage DC systems makes use of the three transmission lines (referred to as the positive pole, the negative pole, and the modulating pole) in an existing high voltage AC system as transmission lines in a bipolar high voltage DC system. When current from the power source is up to the thermal current limit of the transmission lines, the transmission lines operate in two-wire mode, where current is delivered in the positive pole and returned in the negative pole, the modulating pole being open. When power source current exceeds the thermal current limit, operation is in three-wire mode, alternating for predetermined periods between parallel configuration of the positive pole and the modulating pole to divide current for delivery to the load, and parallel configuration of the negative pole and the modulating pole, dividing the return current.
