Abstract:
Provided are in vivo screening methods to detect and identify substances that affect neuronal viability, and/or prevent neurodegeneration, and/or confer neuroprotective effects. The screening methods utilize recombinant C. elegans expressing a detectable marker in neuronal sub-groups and the use of neurotoxins specific to specific neuronal cells. Also provided are methods for identifying modulators of neurotransmitter transporters such as the dopamine transporter. Therefore, the invention provides methods for identifying substances that can be used in the prevention and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.
Abstract:
An electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector is provided. The electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector is a modified metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector including a comb-like metal electrode at a common voltage and metal electrodes each supplied with a control voltage by a voltage means. The wavelength to be detected in an optical input illuminating the detector is selected based on the set of control voltages applied to the metal electrodes. In another embodiment of the invention, the wavelength to be detected with the electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector is also selected using a standing wave generator, such as an interferometer, to produce a spatially varying light intensity on the surface of the electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector. Electronic wavelength demultiplexing is also provided. Design flexibility can be obtained by providing two or more optical patterns at a detector surface, each pattern having a different wavelength dependence.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for an electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector are disclosed. The electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector is a modified metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector comprising a comb-like metal electrode at a common voltage and metal electrodes each supplied with a control voltage by a voltage means. The wavelength to be detected in a stream of light illuminating the electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector is selected based on the set of control voltages applied to the metal electrodes using the voltage means and the relative position of the electronically tuned, wavelength-dependent optical detector.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for increasing the depth of focus of the human eye is comprised of a lens body, an optic in the lens body configured to produce light interference, and a pinhole-like optical aperture substantially in the center of the optic. The optic may be configured to produce light scattering or composed of a light reflective material. Alternatively, the optic may increase the depth of focus via a combination of light interference, light scattering, light reflection and/or light absorption. The optic may also be configured as a series of concentric circles, a weave, a pattern of particles, or a pattern of curvatures. One method involves screening a patient for an ophthalmic lens using a pinhole screening device in the lens to increase the patient's depth of focus. Another method comprises surgically implanting a mask in the patient's eye to increase the depth of focus.
Abstract:
Under the present invention, a (computer) user logs into a distributed application provided on a server. After authentication, a security value (e.g., a pseudo-random number) is generated for the user. The security value is stored at the server, and then sent to the user along with session information. Thereafter, the security value is associated with a set (e.g., one or more) of commands of the distributed application. When one of the set of commands is received from the user, the URL corresponding thereto is checked for the security value. If the value is present, the command is permitted. However, if the security value is not present, the command is not permitted and an error message is returned to the user.
Abstract:
A number of methods and systems for overcoming stiction are provided. The systems include electro-mechanical systems capable of exerting a variety of forces upon areas prone to stiction. The systems can be MEMS arrays or other types of devices where stiction related forces occur. The methods include a variety of ways of causing movement in areas prone to stiction forces. Such movement can be vibrational in nature and is sufficient to overcome stiction, allowing a trapped element to be moveed to a desired location.
Abstract:
A thermal transfer printer having a print head and a media support platform in the form of a removable tray that is displaced relative to the print head, the media support platform having a rigid support surface for a media item having a non-rectangular configuration such as a compact disk, the support platform having a mask with a cutout substantially in the shape of the non-rectangular disk, the mask and media item combining to form a contact surface for the print head to uniformly distribute a constant force of the print head in a uniform pressure across the mask and media item during printing, the mask providing, in addition, a holding apparatus for the media item which is contacted by a displaceable retainer urging the media item against the edge of the mask with the print head avoiding contact with the retainer on the printing area, the printer having a mechanism to displace the retainer and sense whether a media item is properly placed in the cutout and retained by the retaining apparatus, and the printer having a print head unit that can be flipped to the side of the printer for replacement of the print ribbon or access to the print head and internal components for maintenance and servicing.
Abstract:
A system for the duplication of binary data onto CD-R disks, the system including a copy unit, a host computer and computer software, the software being installed in the host computer to provide a user interface and to direct the transfer of data from the host computer to the copy unit, the copy unit including a set of multiple stacked recordable disk drives, a microprocessor electronically connected to the activating mechanism of a pivotal transport tower and to the set of multiple stacked recordable disk drives. A robotic disk pickup head on the pivotal transport tower is encompassed by a set of disk spindle members arranged in a symmetric semi-circular pattern around the central tower, the disk pickup head being connected to the pivotal transport tower with an elevator mechanism for lifting and transporting compact disks among the disk spindle members and any selected one of the stacked recordable disk drive members. The microprocessor concurrently directs the movement of the disk pickup head and the copying of data to the CD-R disks in the disk drive members. After a disk copy operation is completed, the computer software and microprocessor may direct the stacked recordable disk drive members to inspect the burned CD-R disks for copy errors and further direct the disk pickup head to remove and eject defective burned CD-R disks and place properly burned CD-R disks on a specified disk spindle member. The system allows for source data to be read from multiple master compact disks inserted in specified stacked recordable disk drive members to provide for random access copying from the multiple master compact disks.
Abstract:
A modular bone fastener system for use with a longitudinal member, such as a plate, having a fastener with a threaded lower potion for engaging a spinal element and an upper portion adapted to receive a headpiece. The headpiece is adapted to mate with the upper portion of the fastener and to engage a longitudinal member. A plurality of headpieces having angulated projections, lateral sections, and angulated lateral sections, all of which are adapted to engage a longitudinal member and overcome angular and translational misalignment of the fastener, may also be provided. The headpieces of some connectors are configured to permit angulation of a bore fastener relative to the connector.
Abstract:
A workpiece guide includes a fence receiving member having first and second sides, a first mounting member disposed adjacent the first side, and a second mounting member disposed adjacent the second side. A first linking member is connected to the first mounting member, and a second linking member is connected to the second mounting member. A link receiving member is connected to both linking members and may be manipulated to selectively simultaneously bias the first and second mounting members toward or away from the link receiving member.
