Abstract:
Structures, devices, systems and methods of using multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal displays with high transmittance, high contrast ratio and wide view angle in which at least one of the electrode substrates has circular or ring-shaped openings, such as holes or slits. Circular or ring-shaped patterns for openings and electrodes have not been used in the construction of a liquid crystal display. The new multi-domain vertical alignment (MDVA) liquid crystal display is particularly suitable for liquid crystal display television and computer monitor applications.

At least a portion of the joint portion of the first electrode and at least a portion of the joint portion of the second electrode are arranged so as to overlap at least the data lines or the scanning lines, and are aligned in a line extending along the at least the data lines or the scanning lines.
Abstract:
A dual mode Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) capable of functioning in a dual mode, a monochrome reflective mode and a color transmissive mode. The present invention provides an LCD with color filters only over the transmissive part of a pixel, enabling readability in the ambient light. Yet another aspect of the present invention is the elimination of the black matrix mask used typically in color filter creation. Additionally, the present invention provides diagonal pixels to improve the resolution of the LCD in the color transmissive mode. Further, an aspect of the present invention enables the light to switch between two colors, while a third color (typically green) is always on, thereby, decreasing the required frame rate of the LCD, when used in the hybrid field sequential approach. Yet another aspect of the present invention is to create colors from the backlight, eliminating the need for color filters. Yet another aspect of the present invention is use of color filters over only the green pixels, eliminating the need for using additional masks for making the color filter array.

Abstract:
In an IPS liquid crystal display device, a reduction in optical leakage from the outer peripheral portion of an electrode pattern in flexed configuration and an improvement in the contrast of display on a screen are intended. The IPS liquid crystal display device has a plurality of signal lines and scan lines arranged as a matrix on a TFT substrate, TFT switching elements, and comb-like pixel electrodes connected to the TFT switching elements. In a pixel region, a comb-like common electrode is formed in interdigitated relation with the pixel electrodes. The pixel electrodes, the common electrode, and the signal lines are formed in mutually parallel and flexed configuration at a given angle relative to an optical axis. The outer edge of each pixel electrode, the common electrode, and the signal lines is added with fine stairwise fine stepped portions composed of the same material as composing the electrodes and lines.
Abstract:
In an optical modulator according to the present invention, a Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide is formed on a substrate having an electro-optic effect, a signal electrode and an earth electrode are disposed along a pair of branching waveguides of the optical waveguide, and an electric signal is applied on the signal electrode to thereby modulate a light being propagated through the optical waveguide. At this time, a first region and a second region are set in an interacting portion where the light and the electric signal interacts to each other, to form a polarization inversion region in each of the set regions, and also, an arrangement pattern of the signal electrode is determined so that a modulation direction in each of the set regions is opposite to each other. As a result, it is possible to realize the optical modulator of simple configuration capable of realizing simultaneously the broad modulation band and the wavelength chirping suppression.
