Abstract: Holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal material systems in accordance with various embodiments of the invention are illustrated. One embodiment includes a holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal formulation, including monomers, photoinitiators, and a liquid crystal mixture including terphenyl compounds and non-terphenyl compounds, the liquid crystal mixture having a ratio of at least 1:10 by weight percentage of the terphenyl compounds to the non-terphenyl compounds, wherein the photoinitiators are configured to facilitate a photopolymerization induced phase separation process of the monomers and the liquid crystal mixture. In another embodiment, the liquid crystal mixture further includes pyrimidine compounds, and wherein the liquid crystal mixture has a ratio of at least 1:10 by weight percentage of the terphenyl compounds and pyrimidine compounds to the non-terphenyl compounds. In a further embodiment, the ratio of the terphenyl compounds to the non-terphenyl compounds is at least 1.5:10.

Abstract: A holographic waveguide LIDAR comprises a transmitter waveguide coupled to a beam deflector and a receiver waveguide coupled to a detector module. The transmitter waveguide contains an array of grating elements for diffracting a scanned laser beam into a predefined angular ranges. The receiver waveguide contains an array of grating elements for diffracting light reflected from external points within a predefined angular range towards the detector module.

Abstract: Waveguides and waveguide displays having a layer for blocking non-image light (i.e. haze) that could otherwise reduce contrast and degrade color gamut and uniformity, while providing high transmission to external light are provided. Many waveguides and displays incorporate at least one light control layer applied to at least one external surface of said waveguide and overlapping at least a portion of said at least one grating, to divert or block scattered light from said set of gratings that might otherwise enter said eyebox.

Abstract: A method for producing holograms with a multiplicity of holographic prescriptions from a single master is provided. A multiplicity of holographic substrates each containing a first hologram is stacked on a second holographic recording medium substrate. The first hologram is designed to diffract light from a first direction into a second direction. When expose to illumination from the first direction zero order and diffracted light from each first hologram interfere in the second holographic recording medium substrate forming a second hologram. The second hologram is then copied into a third holographic recording medium substrate to provide the final copy hologram.

Abstract: A projection display device comprising a light source and an SBG device having a multiplicity of separate SBG elements sandwiched between transparent substrates to which transparent electrodes have been applied. The substrates function as a light guide. A least one transparent electrode comprises a plurality of independently switchable transparent electrode elements, each electrode element substantially overlaying a unique SBG element. Each SBG element encodes image information to be projected on an image surface. Light coupled into the light guide undergoes total internal reflection until diffracted out to the light guide by an activated SBG element. The SBG diffracts light out of the light guide to form an image region on an image surface when subjected to an applied voltage via said transparent electrodes.

Abstract: Systems and methods for copying a diversity of hologram prescriptions from a common master in accordance with various embodiments of the invention are illustrated. One embodiment includes a method of contact copying a hologram from a master. The method includes steps for providing a light source, a master grating encoding a first grating prescription, a substrate supporting a layer of holographic recording material, and a wavefront modifying component, forming a first wavefront from the light source, reflecting the first wavefront from the wavefront modifying component to provide a second wavefront, diffracting the second wavefront to provide diffracted light with a third wavefront and zero-order light with the second wavefront, interfering the third wavefront and the zero-order light at a contact image plane, and forming a hologram having a second grating prescription different from the first grating prescription.
