Abstract: Hearing aids having example antennas tuned to transmit and receive signals having a frequency greater than or equal to 2.4 GHz are described. The antenna includes a first segment and a second segment. The first segment is configured to fit inside a housing of the hearing aid and to be within the ear canal when the hearing aid is inserted into an ear of a wearer. The second segment is configured to be within the housing and disposed near a side of the housing facing toward an outside of the ear canal when the hearing aid is inserted into the ear of the wearer.

Abstract: An ear-worn electronic device includes a housing comprising a first end and an opposing second end, a first side and an opposing second side, and the first and second sides extending between the first and second ends. The first side is configured to contact the wearer's head. A battery is disposed within the housing proximate the first end. An acoustic receiver or an acoustic receiver connector is disposed within the housing proximate the second end. Electronics including a near-field magnetic induction (NFMI) radio are disposed in the housing. A directional magnetic antenna is situated in or on the housing and coupled to the NFMI radio. The antenna comprises a core having a complex shape and a coil wound around a portion of the core. The core comprises a closed end oriented toward a source of magnetic noise and an open end oriented away from the source of magnetic noise.

Abstract: A hearing device, such as a hearing aid, includes an antenna for wireless communication. The antenna is housed in the hearing aid with an orientation determined to approximately minimize change in performance of the wireless communication when the hearing aid goes onto a wearer's head from free space. In various embodiments, the orientation of the antenna can be optimized by considering various factors including head loading and performance of wireless communication with various other devices.

Abstract: Various system embodiments comprise a plurality of devices configured to wirelessly communicate with each other. The plurality of devices includes a battery-operated hearing aid configured to communicate with another device using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless communication technology. A BLE tester is configured to test the hearing aid for the performance of BLE wireless communication via a wireless link. One embodiment uses a wireless test mode as a diagnostic tool for analyzing the wireless communication environment, such as when the communication with the hearing aid is interfered in a noisy environment.

Abstract: Each accessory device in a set of accessory devices may establish a respective communication link between the accessory device and an ear-wearable device. A particular accessory device in the set of accessory devices may receive data via the communication link between the particular accessory device and the ear-wearable device. The data comprise information generated based on sensor signals from sensors that monitor a user of the ear-wearable device. The accessory devices perform a health monitoring activity based on the data.

Abstract: A method is a described for constructing a hearing aid shell that comprises a combination of hard and soft materials. In one embodiment, 3D printing is combined with conventional mold/casting methods so that a first shell portion made of a hard material and a mold for a second shell portion are 3D printed. The mold is then filled with a soft material which is allowed to set to form the second shell portion, and the first and second shell portions are adhesively attached.

Abstract: Described is state switch for a hearing aid that provides an input to the hearing aid's processing circuitry indicating that battery power has been disconnected by a power switch. The state switch and power switch are configured to operate in parallel. The state switch may provide a signal to a GPIO (general purpose input-output) of the processing circuitry indicating that the battery has been disconnected. Immediately after the battery is disconnected, voltage is maintained for a brief period due to the capacitance of the circuitry, which enables the processing circuitry to take certain steps to avoid device misbehaviors.

Abstract: Described herein are methods and devices for mixing input signals from multiple audio input sources in a hearing device such as a hearing aid. In one embodiment, a gain is applied to a telecoil signal where the gain is computed so as to depend on the level of a microphone signal. The technique does not depend on the user's audiogram and allows control of the gain for all environments with one adjustment.

Abstract: A hearing assistance device such as a hearing aid includes an antenna for wireless communication with another device. The antenna includes two antenna elements and a cross-feed that provides for electrical connection between the two antenna elements. The cross-feed having a flared structure configured to reduce an effect of head loading on the performance of the wireless communication by approximately minimizing capacitive coupling between the cross-feed and a wearer when the hearing assistance device is worn by the wearer.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to inclusion of a non-contact antenna. The non-contact antenna can allow a variety of antennas to be used on a hearing assistance device and can overcome issues associated with mounting an antenna internal to the case of a heating assistance device. A non-contact antenna may include a proximity coupled antenna, such as an antenna mounted on a hearing assistance device case (external to the case) near a feed line that will transfer energy between the antenna and an SMD internal to the case. A non-contact antenna may include an aperture coupled antenna, such as an antenna mounted external to the case on an antenna substrate, where the antenna substrate is on a feed substrate with a feed line, and where there is an aperture in a ground plane.
