Abstract: A fixture holds a specimen during electrical discharge machining of the specimen and prevents tensile test samples cut from the specimen from bending or curving during the electrical discharge machining. The fixture has first engagement surfaces that clamp to one end of the specimen and has second engagement surfaces that clamp to the opposite end of the specimen during electrical discharge machining of the specimen. The fixture clamping to opposite ends of the specimen prevents the tensile test samples cut from the specimen from bending during electrical discharge machining of the specimen.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides for using machine learning to evaluate flight demographics and predict part consumption. Historical aircraft part consumption data indicating prior consumption of aircraft parts is accessed, and historical aircraft flight demographics associated with the historical aircraft part consumption data are determined. A machine learning model is trained based on the historical aircraft part consumption data and the historical aircraft flight demographics, and the machine learning model is deployed to predict future aircraft part consumption.

Abstract: A method of analyzing a composite structure for damage tolerance. The method includes obtaining a structural configuration and determining at least one metric of interest for the structural configuration. A dent depth meta-model is developed based on the structural configuration, the at least one metric of interest, and information obtained from a machine learning algorithm. The at least one metric of interest provides a constraint for the dent depth meta-model and the machine learning algorithm is trained based on a historical physical test dataset of a plurality of composite components. The dent depth meta-model is utilized to estimate an impact energy to establish a threshold dent depth in the structural configuration. A computer-based simulation is performed with the structural configuration utilizing the impact energy from the dent depth meta-model. At least one design value is determined for the structural configuration based on output data generated from the computer-based simulation.

Abstract: An applicator tool for coating a bore includes a tubular body and an inflatable bladder. The tubular body includes a proximal end and a distal end opposing the proximal end along a longitudinal axis. The tubular body also includes an expansion portion proximate the distal end and an internal volume in relation to the expansion portion. The inflatable bladder disposed within the internal volume of the tubular body in relation to the expansion portion. A method for coating a bore includes inserting an expansion portion of an applicator tool into the bore. A coating material having been previously disposed on the expansion portion. The method also includes applying a pressurized fluid to the applicator tool to expand the expansion portion within the bore and rotating the applicator tool to apply the coating material from the expansion portion to the bore. A system that includes the applicator tool is also disclosed.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for super-resolution imaging beyond the Rayleigh spatial resolution limit of an optical system. In the context of a system, first and second pinhole assemblies are configured to be controllably positioned. The first and second pinhole assemblies define respective pinholes and being configured to be backlit. The system also includes a collimating lens configured to collimate at least a portion of the signals passing through the respective pinholes of the first and second pinhole assemblies. The system further includes an amplitude/phase mask configured to provide amplitude and phase modulation to signals received from the collimating lens and an imaging lens configured to focus the signals received from the amplitude/phase mask upon an image plane to permit objects to be separately identified.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for testing a fuel tank for an aircraft. Electrical power is sent to an optical data concentrator for the fuel tank for the aircraft from a power supply such that the optical data concentrator sends optical signals to optical sensors inside the fuel tank through optical fibers connecting the optical data concentrator to the optical sensors. The electrical power is sent during a phase of manufacturing of the aircraft. Test data is received from the optical data concentrator by a computer system. The test data is based on optical response signals received from the optical sensors. A determination of states for the optical sensors is made by the computer system using the test data. A graphical indication of the states determined for the optical sensors inside the fuel tank is displayed by the computer system in a graphical user interface on a display system.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an insert that includes a locking mechanism that may either be formed integrally to the component or attached separately to the insert body. The top of the locking mechanism is offset from the first surface by an offset distance to enable the insert to be coupled to a recess of a component such as an aircraft component. An aperture formed in a top surface of the first portion is configured to allow additional elements to be coupled to the aircraft component. The coupling of the insert to the aircraft component is further promoted by a compression mechanism that forces the locking mechanism to couple to an overhang portion of the top layer after the force applied to the insert once it is positioned in the recess is removed, such that the top surface of the insert is co-planar with an outermost surface of the aircraft component.
