Abstract: A device for measuring forces exerted by the jaws of a chuck under both static and dynamic rotary conditions is characterized by an elongate housing and a piston in a cylinder bore in the housing and extending generally perpendicular thereto. The piston and housing are adapted to be gripped between the jaws of the chuck to pressurize a fluid in the cylinder, and the pressure of the fluid is coupled with a gauge which is moved out of an end of the housing by an amount in accordance with the pressure, and therefore in accordance with the force exerted by the jaws, and a graduated scale on the gauge provides a visual indication of the force.

Abstract: A rectangular hydraulic load cell having a length greater than its width to maintain substantial acting area for high load capacity in narrow locations. The force is transmitted from a load bearing column to a steel diaphragm over the oil reservoir with four bridging members having precise 45* cuts at their ends to reduce friction as the bridging members move under load. Pivot strips with hardened pivot wires are provided which bear upon the upper surface of the bridging members. For precise lateral positioning of the cell column, spacer strips are secured to the casing around the bridging members to form a rectangular lateral bearing surface for the bridging members.

Abstract: A pure fluidic strain gage is disclosed which comprises a conduit or duct constructed of deformable material through which a fluid is caused to flow. The conduit is adapted to receive an external stress and be deformed thereby in a predetermined manner such as by a change in length or the like of the conduit. This deformation produces a change in fluid resistance in the channel and thus effects a variation in the flow characteristics of the fluid through the conduit. A monitoring device, such as a fluidic proportional amplifier, is provided to detect such variations in flow characteristics, these variations being indicative of the value of the external stress received by the conduit and the strain of the conduit.

Abstract: Fluid displacement pressure gauges have pressure responsive elements which displace gauging fluid in readout tubes. Gauging fluid can be located inside or outside the pressure responsive elements. The pressure responsive elements may be capsules with flexible walls or tubular members with flat, curved, corrugated or round walls. Temperature-compensating means and spring rate adjustment means are provided to improve accuracy of reading precision instruments. Hermetically sealed gauges can be used in any position. Readout tubes may have bores of different sizes to improve readout resolution. Differently colored gauging fluids in the readout tubes serve to improve readability. Automatic compensation means may be provided to compensate for variations in fluid volume due to temperature changes. Readout tubes can be provided with means to eliminate parallax in reading scales. Readout tubes and scales can be coiled to improve readout resolution without increasing overall scale height.

Abstract: A load cell comprises two pistons reciprocable with respect to each other and to a surrounding cylinder. Conventional rolling seals seal the pistons and cylinder to each other providing two opposed fluid-pressure chambers acting on different piston areas. Mutually engageable seating surfaces on the pistons constitute elements of regulating valves for balancing fluid pressures in the chambers when a load is applied.
