Abstract:
The invention describes a method for locating an object (B1, B1′, B2, B3) associated with a device (D1, D2, D3) to be controlled, which method comprises aiming a pointing device (1) comprising a camera (2) at a target area (A), generating an image (3) of the target area (A) aimed at by the pointing device (1) and analysing the target area image (3) to determine a property of the object (B1, B1′, B2, B3). A feedback signal (4), regarding the property of the object (B1, B1′, B2, B3), is generated based on analysis of the images (3) and reported to the user by rendering the feedback signal (4) into a tactile indication generated in at least part of the pointing device (1). The invention also describes a pointing device (1), a device control interface (8, 8′) and a system comprising such a pointing device (1) and device control interface (8, 8′) suitable for applying this method. Furthermore, the invention describes a method and a system (15) for controlling a device (D1, D2, D3) using such a method for locating an object (B1, B1′, B2, B3) associated with the device (D1, D2, D3).
Abstract:
A system and method for targeted, remote switching of electrical appliances. The system includes a transmitter for selectively producing a directional output signal and a receiver for detecting the directional output signal from the transmitter. The receiver produces an output signal when the directional output signal from the transmitter is detected that is received by a microcontroller that is incorporated into a switch controller. The microcontroller produces an output that switches the electrical appliance to which the switch controller is connected on and/or off. Although not limited to this use, the system and method of the present invention are particularly adapted for controlling individual light fixtures, even though several fixtures are wired into a single circuit, allowing the individual fixtures to be switched on and/or off as needed and, in the case of light fixtures with multiple bulbs, the dimming of the fixture by switching individual bulbs in the fixture off.
Abstract:
A method of controlling a plurality of network devices in a network with a control point includes registering the plurality of network devices with the control point through the network, providing each of the plurality of network devices with an infrared (IR) sensor, pointing an IR transmitter of the control point at a selected network device, activating the IR transmitter of the control point to emit an IR beam at the IR sensor of the selected network device, establishing a control link between the control point and the selected network device through the network in response to the IR sensor of the selected network device receiving the IR beam from the control point, and issuing a control signal from the control point to the selected network device through the network using the established control link so that the selected network device performs a specified action corresponding to the control signal.
Abstract:
A remote control device, which controls any of a plurality of apparatuses by transmitting a remote control signal for controlling a target apparatus in response to a user operation, detects a position of the remote control device and generates self-position information indicating the position, and specifies one of the apparatuses that is the closest in distance from the remote control device, as the target apparatus, based on the generated self-position information and a predetermined criterion. When the remote control device detects a user operation, the remote control device transmits a remote control signal corresponding to the detected user operation.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for controlling an electronic device. The method comprises pointing using a pointing device at a link device in order to create a wireless data transmission connection between the pointing device and the link device, and transferring identification data between the pointing device and the link device along the created data transmission connection. Next, a first association between the identification data of the pointing device and the identification data of the link device is formed. After this, a second association between the identification data of the user of the pointing device and the identification data device to be controlled communicating with the link device is formed.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an improved television remote control system and method with alphanumeric keyboard input. The alphanumeric keyboard input might be used in interactive televisions to control applications and functions. The remote control includes alphanumeric and controls keyboards, an encoder to encode the alphanumeric and control keyboards with alphanumeric and control codes, respectively, and a transmitter to transmit the alphanumeric and control codes to the television.
Abstract:
System and method for automatically programming a universal remote. In the system, the remote acquires identification data from a particular device at which it is pointed. The data is processed to determine command protocols associated with the particular device. Control commands for the particular device input to the remote by a user are formatted according to the command protocols associated with the particular device.
Abstract:
A plurality of spaced ceiling mounted fixtures or other controllable electrical appliances have radiation detectors mounted within each fixture and wired internally of the fixture to a dimming circuit or to a ballast. The radiation detectors have sensitivity over a wide angle and have elongated plastic radiation conduction rods which extend to or beyond the plane of the lens of the fixture to be located free of shadow effects of reflections of the fixture lens. A flexible end light fiber optics can be used in place of the acrylic rods. A narrow beam radiation transmitter selectively illuminates one of the rods or end light fiber optics without illuminating the others. The dimming circuits or ballasts within the fixtures can be further controlled by external dimmers, occupancy sensors, timeclocks, photosensors and other types of input devices. The radiation detector and ballast can occupy a common housing and share the same power supply and circuit board. The microcontroller for the radiation detector operates with a 4 of 4 voting mode until a valid signal is detected to switch the system to a 3 of 4 voting mode. A novel mounting adaptor for mounting a visible light fiber optic cable is disclosed with the visible light fiber optic cable conducting infrared radiation for up to 24 inches.
Abstract:
A system and method for providing dynamic feedback projection from a hand held pointing device is provided. The system includes a hand held pointing device that is capable of two way communication with appliance interfaces associated with appliances that are controllable by the hand held pointing device. The hand held pointer is capable of transmitting signals to the appliance interfaces and receiving response signals from the appliance interfaces. The hand held pointing device further includes a visible light projection apparatus for projecting light onto a remote surface. The projected light is displaced on the remote surface by a light projection modification apparatus such that the projected light creates images corresponding to the response signals from the appliance interfaces.
Abstract:
A method of directing communication between addressable, electronically-controllable appliances using a generalized pointing device is provided. The pointing device can communicate with dissimilar types of target appliance, and each appliance is associated with an appliance interface that makes the target appliance compatible with the pointing device. Use of the method to direct communication between appliances is believed to allow the convenience associated with the use of a computer's graphical user interface (GUI) to be realized in communication with physical objects, i.e., the target appliances. In particular, the “drag-and-drop” method of using a GUI may be analogous to the pointer-mediated interaction between appliances provided herein. An embodiment of the method includes using the pointing device for: transmitting a selection signal to the first appliance, transmitting a command instructing the first appliance to transmit data, transmitting a selection signal to a second appliance, and transmitting a command instructing the second appliance to receive the transmitted data. The data transmitted between appliances may be sent along a pointer-independent transmission path between the appliances, such as over a network. Additionally or alternatively, data may be transmitted from one appliance to the pointer, and then from the pointer to the other appliance.
