Abstract: An example apparatus may include a display and an optical configuration configured to provide an image of a display, for example, in a head-mounted device. The optical configuration may include a Fresnel lens assembly including a Fresnel lens and a reflective polarizer. The Fresnel lens may have a structured surface including a plurality of facets, and there may be a step between pairs of neighboring facets. The reflective polarizer may include a plurality of reflective polarizer portions, where each reflective polarizer portion conforms to a corresponding facet of the Fresnel lens. The reflective polarizer may be configured to reflect a first polarization and transmit a second polarization of incident light. The optical configuration may form an image of the display viewable by a user when the user wears the apparatus. Other devices, methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method for correcting artifacts in artificial reality headsets is provided. The method includes coupling a first image portion into a waveguide in a display for an artificial reality device, provided by a first array of pixels, coupling a second image portion into the waveguide in the display, provided by a second array of pixels, directing the first image portion through an eyebox, directing the second image portion through the eyebox, and tiling, in a user's retina, the first image portion and the second image portion to form an image having an extended field of view that includes an overlapping area comprising light provided by the first array of pixels and the second array of pixels. A system including a memory storing instructions and a processor to execute the instructions to cause the system to perform the above method are also provided.

The polymer laminate may be incorporated into an eyewear device and may be configured to disperse heat during operation thereof in a manner effective to improve the functionality and/or wearability of the device.

Abstract: An example apparatus may include a display, a beamsplitter having a first region and a second region, and a reflective polarizer. The reflectance of the second region of the beamsplitter may be appreciably greater than the reflectance of the first region; for example, at least approximately 20% greater. In some examples, the second region may be a peripheral region surrounding a generally centrally located first region. An example apparatus may be configured so that at least some light emitted by the display is transmitted through the first region of the beamsplitter, reflects from the reflective polarizer, reflects from the second region of the beamsplitter, and is then directed through the reflective polarizer to an eye of a user when the user wears the apparatus. Other devices, methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Abstract: Mechanically and piezoelectrically anisotropic polymer fibers may be formed by spinning a polymer solution or gel that includes a high molecular weight crystallizable polymer and a liquid solvent. The solvent may be configured to interact with the polymer to facilitate chain alignment and, in some examples, create a higher crystalline content within the spun fibers. The polymer solution may also include a low molecular weight additive. The high and low molecular weight polymers may each be characterized by a bimodal molecular weight distribution where the molecular weight of the additive is less than the molecular weight of the crystallizable polymer. The polymer(s) and the additive(s) may be independently selected from vinylidene fluoride, trifluoroethylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, hexafluoropropene, vinyl fluoride, etc. The spun fibers may be oriented, annealed, poled, and woven or laminated to form a polymer thin film having a high elastic modulus and a high electromechanical coupling factor.

Abstract: Examples include a device including a fluid lens having a membrane (that may be in elastic tension), a substrate, a fluid at least partially enclosed between the membrane and the substrate, and a support structure configured to provide a guide path for an edge portion of the membrane, such as a membrane attachment at a periphery of the membrane. The guide path may be configured to greatly reduce (or substantially eliminate) changes in the elastic energy of the membrane as the membrane profile is adjusted. The guide path may be configured so that the elastic force exerted by the membrane is generally normal to the guide path for each location on the guide path. Adjustment of the membrane profile may include applying an actuation force that is normal to the elastic force exerted by the membrane. Various other methods and apparatus are also disclosed.
