Abstract: A wireless communication system for exchanging messages between a patient support apparatus and a headwall unit includes intelligence built into either or both of these devices (and/or a server) for detecting when a mismatch occurs between the communication capabilities of the patient support apparatus and those of the headwall unit. A warning is issued in those situations where a caregiver is relying on communication abilities that are not present in one or both of the devices. Examples of such situations include, but are not limited to, a nurse call cable not being coupled between the patient support apparatus and the nurse call system when the patient support apparatus does not have the capability to wirelessly communicate with the nurse call system. Alternatively, or additionally, the headwall unit may issue an alert to a nurse call system if it detects one or more conditions that warrant immediate caregiver attention.

Abstract: A patient support, such as a mattress, includes a plurality of inflatable bladders. Depth sensors are included in the support that measure the degree of penetration of a patient into the mattress. An air pressure sensor is also included that measures the pressure inside at least one bladder. A suitable inflation level of the mattress is determined by monitoring the rate of change of the depth with respect to air pressure as the bladder is either inflated or deflated. By detecting an inflection point in the graphical relationship of the depth and pressure outputs, a suitable inflation point for the bladders is determined that reduces interface pressures experienced by the patient, yet does not overly sink the patient into the mattress to a degree of discomfort. Analyzing the outputs of the depth and pressure sensors can also be used to detect a patient's heart rate and respiration rate.

Abstract: A monitoring system includes one or more units that are adapted monitor the radio frequency conditions of a facility or portion of the facility. The units include a packet sniffer and/or an RF spectrum analyzer. Sniffed packets and spectrum data are recorded and made available for analysis and display, either locally on the units or at one or more remote locations. The locations of the units are also gathered, thereby enabling correlation of the sniffed packets and/or RF spectrum data with locations within the facility. Real time RF conditions can thereby be gathered and used to improve the wireless communications within the facility and/or to ensure the wireless communication infrastructure of the facility is operating satisfactorily. The units may be person support apparatuses, such as beds, chairs, stretchers, cots, or the like.

Abstract: An exercise device includes one or more connectors adapted to be releasably coupled to a patient support apparatus; a patient-contacting portion adapted to contact a portion of the patient's body and to be resistively moved between a first position and a second position; a first location transceiver; and a sensor adapted to automatically detect movement of the patient-contacting portion between the first and second positions. The exercise device may also include a wireless transceiver adapted to transmit movement data derived from the sensor to a recipient device. In some embodiments, the exercise device is part of a system that includes a patient support apparatus and a second location transceiver positioned thereon. The location transceivers allow a controller to determine if the exercise device is currently coupled to the patient support apparatus or not, and/or to automatically pair the exercise device to the patient support apparatus for wireless communication.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus includes a frame, patient support surface, memory having a first key stored therein, a transceiver, and a controller. The transceiver wirelessly communicates with a medical device over a first mesh network using the first key. The controller transmits a request message over the first mesh network to the medical device via the transceiver. The request message includes an identifier identifying the patient support apparatus and a request to join a second mesh network different from the first mesh network. The controller receives a second key input over the first mesh network, uses the second key input to generate a second key, and to use the second key to communicate over the second mesh network. In some instances, the second key input originates from a cloud-based server storing a list of authorized devices for a particular healthcare facility.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus includes a frame, a support surface for supporting a patient, and a nurse call interface adapted to provide an interface between a bed and a wall-mounted nurse call outlet having a plurality of pins to thereby allow a patient supported on the bed to communicate with a remotely positioned nurse. The nurse call interface coordinates the duplex signals of the bed's microphone and speaker with the half duplex nurse audio signals from the nurse call system. More particularly, the interface includes a nurse call audio channel communicatively coupled to first and second audio pins of the plurality of pins of the nurse call outlet, a bed microphone channel to a bed microphone, a bed speaker channel to a bed speaker, and a switch controller adapted to selectively connect the nurse call audio channel to the bed microphone channel or to the bed speaker channel.

Abstract: A portable configuration tool for configuring a headwall unit that is adapted to be electrically coupled to an outlet on a headwall communicates with a room device positioned within a common room with the headwall unit. The tool includes a housing, a transceiver for communicating with a portable computer, IR and RF transceivers for communicating with the headwall unit, and a controller adapted to receive a command from the portable computer that instructs the controller to transmit an initial message to the headwall unit using the infrared transceiver, receive an identifier from the headwall unit via the infrared transceiver that uniquely identifies the headwall unit, establish a communication link between the RF transceiver and the headwall unit, receive a configuration setting from the portable computer via the transceiver, and transmit the configuration setting to the headwall unit via at least one of the infrared or RF transceivers.

Abstract: Patient care devices, such as person support apparatuses and thermal control units, include multiple internal network nodes. A controller is associated with each node and at least one of the controllers is adapted to process a message received from another node, convert the message from a first communication protocol to a different communication protocol, and forward the message to yet another node using the different communication protocol. One or more of the controllers may also or alternatively reformulate a packet received in a first format from a first node and forward the reformulated packet to another node. One or more controllers may also send messages over a common data link layer wherein some of the messages are formatted according to different message protocols. Some controllers may utilize real time operating systems while others may not.

Abstract: A system and a method for managing patient therapy protocols are disclosed. The system includes a patient support apparatus for supporting a patient, a first input device for use by a first caregiver, a location system for determining a location of the first caregiver, and a therapy management system. The therapy management system receives a location of the first caregiver and a selection of a patient therapy protocol, which includes a location requirement. The therapy management system then determines whether the first caregiver location input signal satisfies the location requirement before initiating the selected patient therapy protocol or notifying the second caregiver if the location of the first caregiver does not satisfy the location requirement.
