    Abstract: The invention described is a device or apparatus for automatically returning a sliding door or window to a predetermined position within a stationary frame, which incorporates a cable anchor on the frame; a hollow housing on the sliding closure having axially aligned elongated compartments in the housing, the more distant of which from the anchor is fluid-tight; a traveling block axially movably disposed in the closer compartment; a cable from the anchor reeved through sheaves in the traveling block; a tensioner connecting the traveling block with a partition between the compartments and biasing the traveling block away from the anchor to prevent shock in the system when slack is introduced into the cable by manual movement of the closure; the more distant compartment being divided into two fluid-tight chambers communicating at their adjacent ends; a rod longitudinally movably disposed through the traveling block and one chamber; a resilient compression device biasing the rod and the traveling block away from the anchor; a movable valve mounted on the rod to regulate fluid flow between the opposite ends of the chamber, the valve blocking or restricting longitudinal fluid flow within the chamber when the closure moves from the predetermined position and permitting flow when the closure moves toward the predetermined position; and the valve and fluid communication conduits cooperating to control the speed of movement of the rod urged by biasing of the compression device; whereby the closure is returned to the predetermined position at a preselected speed and without shock.

    Abstract: A hood tilt control mechanism includes a hood support brakcet having one hinge leaf attached to the chassis including a longitudinally extending slot for slidably receiving one end of a telescoping hood tilt assist mechanism and a second hinge leaf attached to the hood and providing a pivotal mount for the other end of the assist mechanism. The assist mechanism telescopes or extends respectively against the bias of opening or closing springs disposed adjacently on the assist mechanism so that when the hood is closed, the closing spring exerts a counterbalancing force on the hood to assist its opening. As the hood opens the closing spring force goes to zero and, as the hood moves to the open position, the opening spring is engaged by the mechanism to dampen the motion of the hood, ultimately stops the hood by interference of the spring coils, and counterbalances the hood weight in the open position to assist closing. When the hood is closed, similar damping, stopping, and counterbalancing functions are performed by the closing spring.

    Abstract: A device is described for the automatic closing of openings on a floating structure whereby the need for human or manual intervention is eliminated. Once the floating structure is subjected to tilting (heeling), lateral, or other accelerating forces, an unstable mass is used as a triggering device to remove a block from interfering with the path of the closure.     Abstract: A device is described for the automatic closing of openings on a floating structure whereby the need for human or manual intervention is eliminated.     Abstract: A controlled release door holder comprises a housing having a portion defining a cylinder for containment of a fluid, a piston received in the cylinder for movement axially thereof and dividing the cylinder into first and second chambers, and a linkage between the piston and the door for moving the piston in the cylinder as a function of door movement. A spring compressed between the piston and housing biases the door toward the closed position. Three hydraulic paths communicate the sections of the cylinder on either side of the piston: the first path includes a check valve that allows one-way flow from the spring side to the other side as the door is opened; a second path, which includes a pressure relief valve, allows flow from the other side to the spring side when the door is pushed closed, but resists the spring pressure and holds the door in any desired position; a controllable valve responds to control signals to shunt the fluid pressure generated by the spring in the other side of the cylinder to the spring side so that the spring force acting on the piston moves the door, by force transmission through the linkage, toward closed position.

    Abstract: A separating link and operator particularly adapted as a substitute for the fusible links employed in prior art closure control systems. A first embodiment of the separating link has two link sections whose joinder is controlled by a pull wire latch. One section is a cam link section having an integral ball cam. The second section is a socket link section formed with a socket for receiving the cam in mating relationship. A pair of locks couple the link sections together. The latching engagement of one lock is dependent upon the latching engagement of the other or operating lock. The pull wire latch is connected to a magnetizable armature which reciprocates within a solenoid. Upon deenergization of the solenoid, the pull wire latch is removed from the operating lock thus disengaging this lock. The ball cam then partially separates the two links sections with a resultant disengagement of the dependent lock. Accordingly, the links sections are fully separated in response to external forces applied by a closure, for example. A modification is incorporated within a second embodiment by which each link is a sandwich of elements including a fusible layer. This embodiment thus fully separates in response to excessive heat which causes melting of one or both of the fusible layers, or, alternatively, in response to the removal of the pull wire latch.
