Water-based coating compositions comprise an aqueous solution, emulsion, or dispersion of (a) a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer or oligomer having at least one anionic moiety which is capable of reacting with an oxazoline or oxazine moiety; (b) a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer or oligomer having at least one oxazoline or oxazine moiety; and (c) colloidal silica; at least one of the components (a) and (b) further comprising at least one fluoroaliphatic moiety. The compositions can be used to form hard coatings having low surface energy and high abrasion resistance.

A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition can serve as a transparent coating composition for a multi-component composite coating composition having the transparent coating on a pigmented or colored base coat. The film-forming composition comprises at least two polymeric components. One is a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## Another is at least one additional carbamate functional polymer along with urethane oligomer or is a polyurethane polyol. The former include carbamate functional polyester, acrylic polymer, and polyurethane, where each contains a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of the Structure I depicted above. Also the urethane oligomers has a plurality of carbamate groups of Structure I that are pendant and/or terminal. The latter polyurethane polyol has a plurality of pendant and/or terminal hydroxyl groups and optionally can be used with the urethane polyol and/or any of the aforementioned carbamate functional polymers. Optionally an additional polymer that is present is an acrylic polymer containing a plurality of amide groups with or without a plurality of terminal and/or pendant carbamate groups of Structure I. Also with the presence of the amide functional acrylic polymer, silica can be employed. Additionally for crosslinking the film-forming composition contains an aminoplast crosslinking agent.

The phenolic urethane reactive diluent may be made from a phenolic ester alcohol having at least one aliphatic hydroxyl group.

The present invention provides a curable resin composition incorporating an oligomer containing blocked hydroxyl group, an epoxy-group containing compound, hydrolytic silyl-group containing compound, and a dissociation catalyst and/or curing catalyst, each possessing a specific molecular weight; a paint which uses this resin composition as a binder; and a coat-finishing method which coat-finishes any desired material using the aforementioned resin composition and paint. According to the present invention, it is possible to reduce viscosity, and consequently increase the coat non-volatile content and hence improve acid resistance, abrasion resistance, and the like. In addition, according to the present invention, it is possible to obtain a curable resin composition, paint using this curable resin composition, and coat-finishing method for this paint in which the aforementioned resin and paint have an extremely high utility and possess a high solid content wherein air bubbles and drip-runs are not generated.

Polyesterdiols having low viscosities of less than 3500 cps, high content of non-volatile matter in excess of 96 wt %, and narrow molecular weight distribution of less than about 1.4 are prepared by esterification of one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or ester derivatives thereof using at least a 1.5 molar excess of one or more aliphatic diols until an acid number of less than 20 is achieved, and stripping excess diol from the polyesterdiol reaction product. Where esterification catalyst is used, catalyst is substantially removed prior to stripping excess unreacted diol from polyesterdiol reaction product. The polyesterdiols so produced are useful as (i) curable components in thermosettable resin compositions, particularly compositions essentially free of volatile organic solvent and also containing a crosslinking agent and a reactive hardening agent: and/or (ii) useful as coatings, paints and adhesives, providing coatings with very low content of volatile organic compounds.

A flexible, aminoplast-curable film-forming composition and a process for preparing multi-layered coated articles coated with a pigmented or colored base coat and a transparent or clear topcoat are disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the base coat. The transparent topcoat composition is a flexible, curable film-forming composition comprising (1) a polyether polymer containing a plurality of terminal or pendant carbamate groups of the structure: ##STR1## and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The topcoat composition provides a flexible composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as a topcoat for plastic automotive parts.
