Abstract: A person support apparatus includes a first transceiver adapted to wirelessly communicate with a second transceiver of a headwall interface that is positioned off of the person support apparatus. A communication link is automatically established between the first and second transceivers without requiring a user of the person support apparatus to activate a designated control and without requiring the user to identify the headwall interface. The first transceiver includes a unique identifier assigned to the headwall interface in its messages to the headwall interface. The first transceiver may also automatically transmit a disconnect signal to the headwall interface indicating the termination of the communication link is not accidental. The disconnect signal is sent based on one or more of the following: (1) a brake being off, (2) an A/C power cord being unplugged; and/or (3) a signal strength between the transceivers decreasing.

Abstract: Patient care devices, including beds, cots, stretchers, recliners, chairs, thermal control systems, and IV poles, include a user interface for controlling an aspect of the patient care device, a port for communicating with an external device, and a control system. The control system determines when an external device is communicating with the port, what type of device the external device is, and if the patient care device includes software for allowing the user interface to act as a user interface of the external device. In some embodiments, the control system receives a device type identifier when an external device is coupled to the port, selects a software module for communicating with the coupled external device, and uses the selected software module for communicating with the coupled external device. Multiple external devices may be connected to the port and display data on a display of the patient care device.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, or the like, uses the ability to communicate with a device via near field communication to determine that the device is physically proximate the support apparatus. The support apparatus uses this determination to associate itself with the device. In some instances, the associated device is a mattress positioned on the support apparatus; a footboard on the support apparatus; a medical device used with a patient supported on the support device; a nearby piece of furniture; another patient support apparatus; or an ID tag worn by a caregiver or patient, or attached to a piece of equipment. After the support apparatus and device are associated, they communicate information between each other using far field communication, which supports higher data transfer rates. Flux concentrators are added in some embodiments to extend and/or shape the range of near the field communication.

Abstract: A person support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, or the like, includes an active noise cancellation device configured to generate a noise cancelling sound wave that is designed to cancel a noise sound wave. The active noise cancellation device may include speakers and a microphone. In other embodiments, the person support apparatus includes a sound emitting component and a transmitter adapted to send out a notification signal prior to activation of the sound emitting component. The notification signal provides information about a characteristic of the sound to be emitted by the sound emitting device. The recipient of the notification signal may then use the signal to cancel the sound that is to be emitted. In some embodiments, the person support apparatus acts as a conduit for notification signals of upcoming sounds, receiving and forwarding such notification signals from and to other devices.

Abstract: A patient support includes a patient support surface, a DVT pump mounted in the patient support, and a port mounted at the patient support in selective fluid communication with the DVT pump. Optionally, the patient support further includes a control system to detect when a DVT device is coupled or in close proximity to the port and/or the type of DVT device. Further, the control system may be configured to control the pump based on the type of DVT device coupled to the port.

Abstract: A patient support, such as a mattress, includes a plurality of inflatable bladders. Depth sensors are included in the support that measure the degree of penetration of a patient into the mattress. An air pressure sensor is also included that measures the pressure inside at least one bladder. A suitable inflation level of the mattress is determined by monitoring the rate of change of the depth with respect to air pressure as the bladder is either inflated or deflated. By detecting an inflection point in the graphical relationship of the depth and pressure outputs, a suitable inflation point for the bladders is determined that reduces interface pressures experienced by the patient, yet does not overly sink the patient into the mattress to a degree of discomfort. Analyzing the outputs of the depth and pressure sensors can also be used to detect a patient's heart rate and respiration rate.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus—such as a bed, stretcher, cot, chair, operating table, or the like—includes at least one electrical connector having at least one magnet integrated therein for magnetically retaining the connector with a complementary connector. The connector and the complementary connector may be designed such that they are retained together substantially only by magnetic forces, rather than frictional forces. Multiple magnets may be included within the connectors such that the connectors only couple together in a specific orientation. The connector may connect the patient support apparatus to a mattress positioned thereon, to a wall outlet, to a removable footboard or headboard, to a removable pedestal, or to other devices. The connector may include an internal safety switch that turns on a high voltage connection only when a low voltage connection is established.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, operating table, recliner, or the like, include a litter frame, a support deck, a battery, an AC connector for receiving electrical power, a plurality of motorized actuators, and a control system. The control system limits the amount of electrical power available to the motorized actuators to different levels depending upon whether the AC connector or the battery is powering the patient support apparatus. The control system may also or alternatively change the power available to the motorized actuators depending upon whether a mattress therapy is currently in progress or not. Still further, the control system may pause battery recharging during actuator movement, may utilize one or electronic fuses to control power delivery, and/or wake up sleeping (or shut down) microcontrollers using a specialized network transceiver command that cause the recipient transceiver to wake up its associated microcontroller.
