Abstract:
A novel family of cationic monomers and copolymers containing an alkyl moiety of variable carbon length can be prepared. The cationic-type copolymers are formed through conventional synthesis techniques and the solutions formed with these materials possess rheological properties markedly different than conventional cationic polyelectrolytes.
Abstract:
This invention is directed to a product formed by reacting under condensation conditions, in effective molar ratios, an orthoboric acid and an alkanoletheramine having the formulaH(OCHR-CH.sub.2).sub.n --OR.sub.1 NH.sub.2whereinR is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R.sub.1 is lower alkylene andn is 1-5.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a stable emulsion of at least one water-immiscible liquid phase L in an aqueous phase D is described which comprises mixing the liquid phase or phases L with a dispersion of spheres in an aqueous phase D, the spheres having an average diameter of 0.025 to 5 microns and consisting of substantially concentric lipid laminae encapsulating an aqueous phase E between them, the lipid or lipids constituting the laminae being ionic or nonionic amphiphilic substances capable of forming a lamellar phase in water, and subjecting the whole to mechanical agitation so as to disperse the phase (or phases) L in the phase D in the form of droplets having an average diameter of 0.1 micron to a few microns.
Abstract:
Thickening agents for aqueous systems are prepared by reacting aliphatic alcohols containing 8 to 22 carbon atoms with an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide mixture, then reacting the resulting polyether with 5 to 20 moles of ethylene oxide, and reacting the resulting alkoxylation product with a diepoxide, with 0.5 to 3 moles of alkoxylation product being used in the combination reaction per mole of diepoxide. The thickening agents may be blended with low molecular weight alcohol ethoxylates, and are especially suitable for hydraulic fluids.
Abstract:
Fine particles of gallium or gallium alloy that are covered with a coating agent on the surface can be dispersed in a solvent such as an engine oil, n-hexane, etc., to make a variety of useful liquid suspensions which include a modified automotive engine oil, which is superior to a commercial engine oil; a liquid ski wax which is portable in a cylindrical container; and the like.
Abstract:
Stress cracking in poly(alkylene terephthalate) articles of manufacture is prevented by applying to the article a hydrophilic-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon having either an alkyl or aryl side chain, such as, sodium xylene sulfonate. Preferably, the stress crack inhibitor is applied to the article in the form of an aqueous fatty acid-based lubricant.
Abstract:
Compounds which improve extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of lubricating compositions are described. The compounds include the compounds of the following formula as well as statistical mixtures of those compounds: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl; R.sub.2 is hydrocarbyl having at least 4 carbon atoms or together with R.sub.1 forms a heterocyclic radical, wherein R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl;wherein a is 0 or 1;wherein n is 1, 2 or 3;wherein X is oxygen or sulfur;wherein R.sub.5 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl; andwhen n is 1, R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## and when n is 2, R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR3## and when n is 3, R.sub.6 is ##STR4## wherein R is independently an alkyl moiety, alkylene or alkylidene moiety containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R' is hydrogen or alkyl moiety, alkylene, alkylidene or carboxyl containing 1 to 60 carbon atoms, and R" is aryl or substituted aryl.

Abstract:
1-Bromopinacolone is a microbial biocide that is highly effective in suppressing the growth of bacteria, fungi and algae which can occur during storage and use of hydrocarbon oils including gasoline, jet fuel and heating oil. It is particularly effective in emulsifiable oils for metal working, such as cutting oils and rolling oils.
