Abstract: A patient transport apparatus transports a patient over a floor surface. The patient transport apparatus comprises a support structure and support wheels coupled to the support structure. An auxiliary wheel is coupled to the support structure to influence motion of the patient transport apparatus over the floor surface to assist users. An actuator is operatively coupled to the auxiliary wheel and operable to move the auxiliary wheel relative to the support structure from a retracted position to a deployed position. A user interface sensor is operatively connected to the actuator and configured to generate signals responsive to the user touching the user interface. A controller is operatively coupled to the user interface sensor and the actuator to operate the actuator in response to detection of signals.

Abstract: A system includes a server and a patient support apparatus having a support surface, a plurality of ultra-wideband transceivers, and a controller. The controller is adapted to use the ultra-wideband transceivers to automatically determine a position of a badge and/or tag relative to the patient support apparatus and to use the position information of the badge and/or tag to automatically perform one or more of the following: display a cleaning screen used by cleaning workers; determine if the patient support apparatus is ready to be, or already has been, cleaned; identify and record an identity of the worker who cleaned the patient support apparatus; determine a closest transport worker; and/or update an equipment weight log maintained by the patient support apparatus. The badge(s) may be worn by a healthcare worker and the tag(s) may be coupled to an object or worn by the patient.

Abstract: A system and a method for managing patient therapy protocols are disclosed. The system includes a patient support apparatus for supporting a patient, a first input device for use by a first caregiver, a location system for determining a location of the first caregiver, and a therapy management system. The therapy management system receives a location of the first caregiver and a selection of a patient therapy protocol, which includes a location requirement. The therapy management system then determines whether the first caregiver location input signal satisfies the location requirement before initiating the selected patient therapy protocol or notifying a second caregiver if the location of the first caregiver does not satisfy the location requirement.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus and a portable service tool are adapted to communicate with each other in order to allow a user of the service tool to wirelessly update software executed by the patient support apparatus. In some embodiments, the patient support apparatus displays a coded message that encodes network credentials (e.g. SSID, password, etc.) and the software tool is adapted to capture an image of the coded message, decode the message, and then set up a wireless network having the decoded network credentials. The patient support apparatus then automatically joins the network and receives one or more wireless software updates. The service tool may alternatively or additionally connect to a healthcare facility network and upload software to a server thereon, which then downloads the software to the patient support apparatus over the healthcare facility computer network.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient includes first, second, and third transceivers mounted at first, second, and third locations, respectively. A controller is adapted to use radio frequency communication between the first, second, and third transceivers and a first device—such as a patient temperature management device—to determine a position of the first device relative to the patient support apparatus. The controller is further adapted to use data from one or more other devices to determine whether or not to associate the first device with the patient support apparatus. In some aspects, the controller uses the position and/or identity of one or more thermal pads and/or hoses to determine if the first device is to be associated with the patient support apparatus. Such association refers to the conclusion that the patient support apparatus and the first device are both being used with the same patient.

Abstract: A wireless communication system for exchanging messages between a patient support apparatus and a headwall unit includes intelligence built into either or both of these devices (and/or a server) for detecting when a mismatch occurs between the communication capabilities of the patient support apparatus and those of the headwall unit. A warning is issued in those situations where a caregiver is relying on communication abilities that are not present in one or both of the devices. Examples of such situations include, but are not limited to, a nurse call cable not being coupled between the patient support apparatus and the nurse call system when the patient support apparatus does not have the capability to wirelessly communicate with the nurse call system. Alternatively, or additionally, the headwall unit may issue an alert to a nurse call system if it detects one or more conditions that warrant immediate caregiver attention.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, operating table, recliner, or the like, include a litter frame, a support deck, a battery, an AC connector for receiving electrical power, a plurality of motorized actuators, and a control system. The control system limits the amount of electrical power available to the motorized actuators to different levels depending upon whether the AC connector or the battery is powering the patient support apparatus. The control system may also or alternatively change the power available to the motorized actuators depending upon whether a mattress therapy is currently in progress or not. Still further, the control system may pause battery recharging during actuator movement, may utilize one or electronic fuses to control power delivery, and/or wake up sleeping (or shut down) microcontrollers using a specialized network transceiver command that cause the recipient transceiver to wake up its associated microcontroller.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient wirelessly communicates with one or more tags using one or more RF transceivers. A controller onboard the patient support apparatus determines a position of the tag. The controller also receives an identifier from the tag and uses it to determine if the tag is attached to a patient or a device. If attached to a patient, the controller may allow a caregiver to activate a patient movement monitoring function. The movement monitoring function may monitor whether the patient exits the patient support apparatus, whether the patient has been turned, whether the patient is at risk of developing bed sores, and/or other aspects. If the tag is attached to a device, the controller automatically determines whether to associate the device with the patient support apparatus. The controller may also determine the location of the patient support apparatus from the RF transceivers.

Abstract: A patient transport apparatus includes a base, a patient support deck, a plurality of wheels, a plurality of brakes, and an electro-mechanical braking system. The electro-mechanical braking system includes a linkage, a manual actuator, and an electrical braking assembly. The linkage is operatively coupled to the brakes to place the brakes in a braked state, a released state, or other state. The manual actuator moves the linkage manually to place the brakes in one of the states. The electrical braking assembly includes an actuator assembly that moves the linkage with electrical power to place the brakes in one of the states.
