Abstract:
A mounting for an object processed at a predetermined temperature in an uahigh vacuum chamber having a stainless steel wall. The mounting has a stainless steel tube welded to the wall and opening through it and has an oxygen-free-high-conductivity copper finger extended from the tube to receive the object. At the junction of the tube and the finger, the tube bears an annular knife edge which engages a flat surface of the finger, and an ultrahigh vacuum seal is established by a collar and bolt coupling which draws the finger against the knife edge. The temperature of the finger and the object are then controlled and measured by cryogenic liquids, electrical heaters, and sensors inserted through the tube into contact with the finger.
Abstract:
An aluminum material for use in a vacuum is produced by a process comprising the steps of removing a hydrated oxide coating from the surface of a worked aluminum material to obtain a clean surface in a dry state, and heating the aluminum material in an oxygen gas-containing atmosphere out of contact with the water-containing atmosphere to form an oxide coating on the dry clean surface.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the operation of several autoclaves of an autoclave battery in which steam is carried in the circuit, whereby at least part of the steam carried in the circuit is brought to a higher pressure-temperature level from a relatively lower pressure-temperature level by means of a mechanically driven compressor, e.g., a turbocompressor, piston compressor or screw compressor without live steam supply. The invention also concerns an apparatus consisting of an autoclave battery in which steam is carried in the circuit in lines with shut-off valves, characterized by at least one compressor in the steam circulatory system.
Abstract:
A nozzle construction for jacketed pressure vessels includes a nozzle member which extends through a vessel opening, the vessel portion adjacent the opening and a portion of the nozzle having complementary surfaces. A split ring and bolt arrangement draws the nozzle against a gasket disposed between the complementary nozzle and vessel surfaces.
Abstract:
An electrically heated reactor for high temperature and pressure chemical reactions includes a reactor vessel having an inlet opening for introduction of raw material onto the reactor and an outlet opening for removal of heated material from the reactor. An electric heating assembly extends through the inlet opening into the interior of the vessel and includes a metallic inner tube through which raw material can be introduced into the vessel and an outer ferromagnetic tube arranged in spaced concentric relationship with respect to the inner tube and generally coextensive in length therewith. The innermost ends of the tubes are electrically connected to each other by a metallic member which seals the space between the tubes. An electrical insulating medium is disposed within the space. A variable frequency alternating current source is connected between the inner and outer tubes outside of the vessel and the outer tube is in direct contact with and is welded to the wall of the vessel at the inlet opening to form a seal therebetween. The outer tube has a thickness greater than the penetration depth of the alternating current. The inner tube may be ferromagnetic and have a thickness like that of the outer tube.
Abstract:
A pressure relief apparatus for a high pressure slurry processing system is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pressure container, an escape member in the container inlet and a flow restrictor in the container outlet.
Abstract:
A system and methods with scavenging capabilities for simultaneously filling and evacuating a plurality of separate pressure vessels including valved conduits interconnecting a source of pressurized fluid and a source of vacuum separately to at least two pressure vessels whereby while one vessel is being filled the other is being evacuated and means to connect an evacuated tank to portions of the system for the purpose of using the vacuum therein to scavenge residue gas in said portions.
Abstract:
A magnetic coupling for a stirrer drive in a high pressure autoclave in which the magnet shaft is in the form of a sleeve-like bush fixed on the end of the stirrer shaft. A portion of the magnet shaft serves as a carrier of segmented permanent magnets on the outside. An inner coupling part, including the magnet shaft, is covered by a hood and the outer coupling part comprises a bell equipped with permanent magnets on the inside. The bell covers the hood.
Abstract:
A power feed through for vacuum electric furnaces is provided for furnaces in which work pieces to be processed are placed inside a vacuum electric furnace chamber which is evacuated with a mechanical pump and then backfilled with a partial pressure of gas containing nitrogen, such as nitrogen or ammonia, or a hydrocarbon such as methane, or mixtures thereof. The work pieces to be processed are electrically connected to the negative (cathode) terminal of a D.C. power supply, the positive terminal being connected to the chamber wall and to ground. The power supply is energized and a portion of the gas is ionized. The work pieces are heated to temperatures of approximately 650.degree. to 1100.degree. F. for ion nitriding or to temperatures of approximately 1650.degree. to 1900.degree. F. for ion carburizing. The heating is effected at least in part by the ion activity but auxiliary heating elements may be used if desired. Materials that are sputtered from the work travel in straight lines, tend to build up on work supports and power feeders thereby causing electrical shorting. Shorting is greatly reduced in this structure by the use of shields in the form of spaced insulating discs carried on the power feeders.
Abstract:
A multilayer vessel or tube comprises an inner core tube and a plurality of supporting layer tubes around said inner core tube which have degassing bores. A blind layer is provided between the core tube and the innermost supporting layer tube and a plurality of core plugs rest on the core tube and are provided in a number corresponding to the number of degassing bores. The blind layer has an opening therethrough and is longitundinally split into segments and a parting channel is formed between every adjacent two segments. A core plug is positioned in central alignment with the parting channel in an opening of the blind layer. One of the supporting layers is welded only by its upper portion to the supporting layer and the core plug has a bore communicating directly or indirectly with the atmosphere. A degassing pipe is threaded into a threaded bore defined in the core plug and the core plug is provided with grooves which extend transversely along its underside, which rests on the core tube.
