Abstract:
An apparatus, for testing a spring pack of a valve operator, includes a hollow housing with a coupling for attaching to the valve operator. A slider is received within the housing and moves therein when driven by a bolt that extends through a threaded aperture in the housing. A load sensor is attached to the slider and extends through the coupling and engages a valve operator component that is connected to the spring pack. As a technician turns the bolt, the apparatus compresses the spring pack within the valve operator and the load sensor produces an electrical signal that indicates how much force is exerted by the spring pack. At the same time, a transducer produces another electrical signal indicating the displacement of the spring pack.
Abstract:
A method for measuring figure of deflection of a golf club shaft, including the steps of horizontally orienting the golf club shaft along an x-axis and fixing a grip end of the golf club shaft to form a cantilever, deflecting the golf club by applying a predetermined load at points on the golf club shaft located on the side of the shaft near the free end thereof to form a deflection curve of the golf club shaft, and obtaining the location of an intersection point of a tangent of the deflection curve and the x axis. The tangent is obtained at the load applying point or in the vicinity of the load applying point on the free end side of the golf club shaft. The method further includes the step of determining a distance between the intersection point and a specific point on the golf club shaft to obtain a parameter which represents the figure of deflection of the golf club shaft.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a free field stress gauge that can operate in a medium with ambient normal stress fields up to 10 kilobars. The invention uses two machined parts, a top annulus cover disc portion and an active bottom disc portion such that the annulus top cover disc covers the active bottom disc portion but allows a solid central sensing column to be exposed to ambient conditions. The disc portions have a dual sealing means to protect the strain gauges therein from fluid ingress. The gauge is suitable for measuring stresses of soil and rock formations as well as concrete, asphalt or other materials in either a static or dynamic regime. The stress gauge is designed for high uni-axial stress measurements, improved frequency response, have low hysteretic induced effects in measurements and be a thinner gauge.
Abstract:
A device for measuring the distance moved by an applicator head of a container filling and capping station and, hence, a force applied by the head, the device having a housing, a plunger telescopically inter-fitted with the housing so as to be substantially linearly movable relative thereto, a biasing device biasing the members to a rest position, and an indicator mounted on the members; the indicator having at least one component thereof movable such that, during one stage of relative movement of the members from their rest position against the bias of the biasing device and return to their rest position under such bias, the at least one component is fixed relative to one of the members and movable relative to the other member, and such that during the other stage of that movement the at least one component is fixed relative to the other of the members and movable relative to the one member to thereby provide a measure of the relative movement of the members in one of the stages, and wherein the external form of the measuring device corresponds to a standard container to which a closure member is to be fitted by an applicator head of a container filling and capping machine, such that the measuring device can be inserted upstream from the applicator head in a process line for containers passed through the machine and thereby subjected to the action of the applicator head to obtain a read-out of distance moved or pressure applied by the applicator head.
Abstract:
A pair of flanged telescoping covers houses a main spring comprising two osed Belleville discs, which provide the elastically deformable metal that is squeezed when the gage is placed between the track and an idler wheel. Cam mechanism occupies a central cavity provided by both covers, wherein a pin held against rotation by one cover engages slots in a cup movable in the other cover against a helical spring. The cup carries a pointer which moves across a scale.
Abstract:
This lower link for a three-bar hitch provides a practical way to determine the tension force present in a lower link independent of any bending or other loadings. The link is formed of two bars which are bent out from each other to an intermediate point and then converge together forming a diamond-shaped opening between the bars and the distance between the intermediate points on the bars is measured by a length measuring device; the length being translatable into the tension force on the link.
Abstract:
A semiconductor transducer comprising an improved strain-yielding body yielding a strain in response to the impartation of a force or displacement, and a semiconductor strain gauge bonded to the strain-yielding body. The improved strain-yielding body is made of an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy containing 28.2 to 31.0% by weight of nickel and 15.0 to 19.5% by weight of cobalt. This iron-nickel-cobalt alloy is initially heated up to a temperature above 600.degree. C. for the purpose of standard heat treatment for removing its internal strain. After the standard heat treatment, the iron-nickel-cobalt alloy is subjected to cold working at a working rate of more than and including 60%, and is then subjected to heat treatment at a temperature between 350.degree. C. and 600.degree. C. The heat-treated iron-nickel-cobalt alloy is shaped into the predetermined form of the strain-yielding body.
Abstract:
Indicator means for indicating the magnitude of force applied to a load cell in accordance with the deflection of the free end of a cantilever member of the load cell having the force applied thereto, comprising a scale, a pivoted indicator arm, the pivoting of which is produced by gravity and is limited by a pin movable in accordance with the deflection of the free end of the cantilever member, which pin is movable longitudinally of the cantilever member to adjust the calibration of the indicator. The cantilever member is constructed of a plurality of spaced apart elongated members, the spacing between which and the number of which may be varied to adjust the sensitivity of the load cell. Stop means are provided for the cantilever member within the elastic limit thereof.
Abstract:
The force transducer includes a composite spring structure having first and second folded cantilever leaf spring portions coupled to the region to receive the force to be measured. The first and second leaf spring portions extend outwardly from, and are angularly displaced with respect to each other, around an axis of sensitivity. Each folded cantilever leaf spring portion includes first and second generally parallel elongated leg portions extending outwardly from the axis of sensitivity with each of said leg portions being coupled together at the outer end by a coupling structure which is free to move both parallel to and perpendicular to the axis of sensitivity in response to displacement of the inner end of one of said leg portions relative to the other along the axis of sensitivity in response to application of the force to be measured to the inner ends of the leg portions. The leg portions are dimensioned to have a higher compliance along the axis of sensitivity than the compliance thereof perpendicular to the axis of sensitivity. Differential capacitance or piezoresistance strain gauges are the preferred method for deriving an output which is proportional to the component of applied force tending to displace one of the leg portions relative to the other along the axis of sensitivity. Squeeze film damping is the preferred method of damping the composite spring structure.
