Abstract: A technique for illuminating an end of a surgical tool near a front of an eye. The technique avoids increased illumination of an operating room and challenges to the surgeon associated with such increased illuminating. Instead, a tailored window of light may be directed at the end of the surgical tool that is to be guided into the eye. This tailored window of light is of such minimal illumination or narrow monochromatic light that visual enhancement is provided without a resultant constriction to the surgeon's own eyes. Further, a cannula for receiving the end of the surgical instrument may also be visually enhanced with similar fluorescent light.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to high dexterity robotic manipulation systems for ophthalmic microsurgical procedures. In certain embodiments, a robotic surgical system includes a master apparatus controllably coupled to a slave apparatus. The slave apparatus mounts to a patient's head and includes a dual tripod structure having two pluralities of linear actuator links pivotally supporting a surgical tool. The motions of the actuator links are controlled by direct drive actuators to provide at least 6-DOF for the surgical tool. A passive articulating arm having a SCARA mechanism and four-bar parallelogram mechanism attaches to the slave apparatus and counterbalances the weight thereof when mounted on a patient. The surgical system also includes sensors communicatively coupled to the slave apparatus and master apparatus to enable force feedback and force control. Accordingly, the robotic surgical system enhances the dexterity of an operator and enables performance of medical procedures more easily than by hand.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide a voice-controlled system for controlling devices and systems in a surgical setting. The voice-controlled system includes at least one microphone and at least one loudspeaker distributed within the surgical setting to receive and audibly respond to voice commands from operating staff. In certain aspects, the at least one microphone and at least one loudspeaker include a phased microphone array and a phased loudspeaker array that are coordinated and synchronized to perform active noise reduction, echo cancellation, and directional determination of sound sources. The voice-controlled system performs tasks, such as activation of surgical devices, based on verbal interactions with the operating staff through the at least one microphone and at least one loudspeaker. In certain aspects, the voice-controlled system is configured to recognize, decipher, and prioritize natural language commands from different operating staff, and further provides pre-programming of device settings and operating staff pre-sets.

Abstract: In certain embodiments, an apparatus is provided for performing a subretinal injection into a subretinal space between a retina and a retinal pigment epithelium of an eye. The apparatus includes an injection needle having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end configured to be insertable into the subretinal space at a position on a surface of the retina. The apparatus includes a multi-lumen tubing having a distal end coupled to the proximal end of the injection needle and a proximal end coupled to a fluid control unit. The apparatus includes a stabilizer configured to immobilize the injection needle at the position on the surface of the retina. The fluid control unit has a plurality of fluid reservoirs containing a non-treatment solution, a treatment solution, and a working fluid which are injectable into the eye via separate lumens of the multi-lumen tubing.

Abstract: A method for inspecting an ophthalmic lens for the presence of an unacceptable semi-opaque defect in a lens body thereof comprises the steps of: illuminating the lens body with laser light in an area bounded by an edge of the lens body; detecting the intensity of laser light scattered by the illuminated lens body in a predetermined detection direction which is different from a direction of reflection; comparing the detected intensity of the scattered laser light with a predetermined threshold intensity; determining a size of at least one coherent area in which the detected intensity of the scattered laser light is higher than the predetermined threshold intensity; determining whether the size of the at least one coherent area is larger than a predetermined threshold size, and rejecting the ophthalmic lens in case the size of the at least one coherent area is larger than the predetermined threshold size.

Abstract: A system and method for augmenting an original OCT (optical coherence tomography) image includes a controller having a processor and a tangible, non-transitory memory on which instructions are recorded. The system includes one or more learning modules selectively executable by the controller. The learning modules are trained by a training network with a training dataset having a plurality of training ultrasound bio-microscopy images and respective training OCT images. Execution of the instructions by the processor causes the controller to obtain the original OCT image, captured through an OCT device. The controller is configured to generate an augmented OCT image based in part on the original OCT image, by executing the (trained) learning modules. The augmented OCT image at least partially extends a peripheral portion of the original OCT image.

Abstract: According to certain embodiments, an ophthalmic surgical system for treating presbyopia comprises controllable components and a computer. The controllable components comprise a light source that generates a light beam and a scanner that directs a focal point of the light beam. The computer determines an ablation profile to remove tissue from a central region and a peripheral region of a cornea of a first eye of a pair of eyes. The ablation profile is designed to remove tissue from the central region to yield a protrusion to provide for near-vision, and to remove tissue from the peripheral region to correct to emmetropia.
