There is described a biodiesel composition and process for producing biodiesel and related products. There is also described related fuels and fuel blends comprising biodiesel. The biodiesel composition may be prepared from a mixture comprising fats, oils and greases from sewer waste.

There is described a process and an apparatus for purifying a mixture and related products. In particular, there is described a process and an apparatus for purifying a mixture comprising fats, oils and greases as are typically found in sewer waste. The process involves heating, acidifying and separating the mixture. The apparatus used includes a heating and separation device for separating into a solid fraction, an organic liquid fraction and an aqueous liquid fraction. Apparatus such as a three phase separation unit and a rotary vacuum filter may also be used.

Recycle of an extract stream containing a contaminant is used to improve recovery of hydrocarbons in a contaminant removal process. At least a portion of an extract stream is recycled to a contaminant extraction zone and contacted with rich ionic liquid. Contaminants in the recycle extract stream are transferred to the rich ionic liquid.

A method of removing fines from a hydrocarbon-containing fluid can include preparing a bed media of particulate earthen material (12). The hydrocarbon-containing fluid having fines therein can be passed through the bed media (12) at a flow rate such that a portion of the fines are retained in the bed media (12) to form a filtered hydrocarbon-containing fluid. The flow rate is sufficient to maintain a wetting film of the hydrocarbon-containing fluid across at least a majority portion of the particulate earthen material which is contacted by the hydrocarbon-containing fluid. The filtered hydrocarbon-containing fluid can be recovered from the bed media (12) via a suitable outlet (16) having substantially reduced or eliminated fines content.

A process for the conversion of an alcohol mixture to make propylene may include introducing into a reactor a stream that includes the alcohol mixture. The alcohol mixture may include 20 to 100 weight percent isobutanol. The process may include contacting the stream with a single catalyst at a temperature above 450° C. in the reactor at conditions effective to dehydrate the isobutanol, forming C4+ olefins, and to catalytically crack the C4+ olefins. The single catalyst may be an acid catalyst adapted to cause both the dehydration and the catalytic cracking. The process may include recovering from the reactor an effluent that includes ethylene, propylene, water, and various hydrocarbons. The process may include fractionating the effluent to produce an ethylene stream, a propylene stream, a fraction of hydrocarbons having 4 carbon atoms or more, and water.

An integrated hydrotreating, steam pyrolysis and coker process for the direct processing of a crude oil is provided to produce olefinic and aromatic petrochemicals, and petroleum coke. Crude oil and recycled coker liquid product are charged to a hydroprocessing zone operating under conditions effective to produce a hydroprocessed effluent which is thermally cracked in the presence of steam to produce a mixed product stream. The residual liquid fraction recovered upstream of the thermal cracking unit or within the thermal cracking unit is thermally cracked under conditions effective to produce coke and coker liquid product. The coker liquid product is recycled to the step of hydroprocessing while the petroleum coke is recovered. Hydrogen from the mixed product stream is purified and recycled to the hydroprocessing zone, and olefins, aromatics and pyrolysis fuel oil are recovered from the separated mixed product stream.

Oil-contaminated solids are transported through two or more solvent baths on vibrating conveyors and contacted with solvent flowing countercurrent to the direction of transport of the oil-contaminated solids through the baths such that oil contaminant is separated from the solids.

Embodiments of apparatuses and methods for hydrotreating coker kerosene or other thermally or catalytically cracked hydrocarbon stream are provided. In one example, a method comprises splitting a feed comprising coker kerosene into first and second feed streams. The first feed stream is heated to form a heated first feed stream. The second feed stream is partially heated to form a partially heated second feed stream. The heated first feed stream is contacted with a first hydrotreating catalyst to form a first hydrotreated intermediate stream. The first hydrotreated intermediate stream is combined with the partially heated second feed stream to form a partially quenched first hydrotreated intermediate combined stream. The partially quenched first hydrotreated intermediate combined stream is contacted with a second hydrotreating catalyst to further hydrotreat the partially quenched first hydrotreated intermediate combined stream.

A method of upgrading naphtha and diesel yields from fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking units by improving a feed quality of a petroleum feedstock, product or fraction mixture. The method of improving the feed quality of the petroleum feedstock, product or fraction mixture occurs by first determining the API Gravity of a petroleum feedstock, product or fraction mixture. A temperature at which about fifty percent of the petroleum feedstock, product or fraction boils (T50) is then determined. The feed quality for the petroleum feedstock, product or fraction mixture as determined from the API Gravity and the T50 for the feedstock, product or fraction mixture is then estimated followed by adjusting the petroleum feedstock, product or fraction mixture to achieve a higher feed quality.
