Abstract: Design, fabrication, and usage of a reactor are presented for synthesis of structured materials from a liquid-phase precursor by heating. The structured materials are particles, membranes or films of micro-porous molecular sieve crystals such as zeolite and meso-porous materials. The precursor solution and structured materials in the reactor are uniformly heated by a planar heater with characteristic heat transfer dimension in the range of 3 mm to 10 cm. A planar heater having width and length at least three times of the characteristic heat transfer dimension provides at least one surface of uniform temperature distribution for heating purposes. Heating is conducted over a temperature range of 20 to 300° C. The planar heater can be heated by electrical power of by thermal fluid.

Abstract: Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for sterilizing a container comprising a liquid, where a method may comprise placing the container within an autoclave vessel; pressurizing the autoclave vessel to an initial pressure, by pressurizing the autoclave vessel with a clean gas via a first valve; after pressurizing the autoclave vessel to the initial pressure, heating the autoclave vessel to sterilize the liquid within the container within the autoclave vessel; controlling the pressure within the autoclave vessel while heating the autoclave vessel to maintain a pressure within ±10% of the initial pressure via a second valve; and cooling the autoclave vessel after sterilization.

Abstract: A method for purifying a reclaimed polyethylene is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method involves obtaining reclaimed polyethylene, contacting the reclaimed polyethylene with a first fluid solvent to produce an extracted reclaimed polyethylene; then dissolving the extracted reclaimed polyethylene in a solvent to produce a first solution comprising polyethylene. The first solution is settled and then filtered. A purer polyethylene is separated from the resulting solution.

Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for hydrothermal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. A mechanically simple and inexpensive vertical steam reactor is fed with biomass feedstock from the top, while pretreated material is removed from the bottom in steady-state by operation of moveable upper and lower restrictor means, which project across the reactor cross section when engaged. The vertical column of biomass is supported by the upper restrictor means. This is periodically withdrawn from the reactor cross section, permitting the column of biomass to fall by force of gravity onto the lower restrictor means. The upper restrictor means is then re-inserted, after which the lower restrictor means is withdrawn permitting a “plug” of pretreated material to be removed by force of gravity. Using biomass feedstock that has been compressed in a reciprocating piston press to bulk density of at least 500 kg/m3, which can be fed dry into the reactor using simple, inexpensive sluice systems and then wetted inside the reactor, this system provides comparable biomass throughput at a fraction of the cost of traditional commercial hydrothermal pretreatment systems used in “second generation” biorefining.
