Abstract: Various embodiments provide ice mitigating surface coatings and methods for applying ice mitigating surface coatings. Various embodiment ice mitigating surface coatings may be formed by hydrolysis of one or more substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes terminated with functionalities having the following characteristics with respect to water: 1) non-polar interactions; 2) hydrogen bonding through donor and acceptor interactions; or 3) hydrogen bonding through acceptor interactions only. The substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes of the various embodiments may include methyl terminated species, hydroxyl terminated species, ethylene glycol terminated species, and methoxyethylene glycol terminated species. Various embodiment ice mitigating surface coatings may be applied to metal surfaces, such as aluminum surfaces. Various embodiment substituted n-alkyldimethylalkoxysilanes may have an aliphatic chain that is saturated and liner or branched or that is partially unsaturated and liner or branched.

Abstract: A system and method for modifying motion of a liquid is provided. Containers are disposed within a liquid contained within a tank. Each container has an open end. Each container is disposed in the liquid such that a portion of the liquid fills a portion of each container to seal its open end. A remainder of each container is filled with a gas. At least one gas pressurization source is in fluid communication with the remainder or gas-containing portion of at least one of the containers for pressurizing the gas therein. Pressure is applied to the gas in each container. For each container, the portion of the liquid contained therein and the pressure applied to the gas therein cooperate to modify movement of the liquid in the tank.

Abstract: A metal junction thermoelectric device includes at least one thermoelectric element. The thermoelectric element has first and second opposite sides, and a first conductor made from a first metal, and a second conductor made from a second metal. The first and second conductors are electrically interconnected in series, and the first and second conductors are arranged to conduct heat in parallel between the first and second sides. The first metal has a first occupancy state, and the second metal has a second occupancy state that is lower than the first occupancy state. A temperature difference between the first and second sides of the thermoelectric element causes a charge potential due to the difference in occupancy states of the first and second metals. The charge potential generates electrical power.

Abstract: A vertical take-off or landing (VTOL) aircraft is disclosed that includes a propulsion system comprising at least four tilting propulsion assemblies and two or more lifting propulsion assemblies. Abstract: A powered base assembly includes first and second structures that are operably interconnected by at least three legs that can include electrically-powered linear actuators. Each electrically powered actuator includes a housing and a rod associated with the housing. Each rod is connected to one of the first and second structures by a swivel joint having two degrees of freedom, and each housing is connected to the other of the first and second structure by a swivel joint having one degree of freedom. The linear actuators can be actuated to thereby change at least one of an angular position of the first structure relative to the second structure and a distance of the first structure, relative to the second structure. In this way, the base assembly may be used for leveling or moving a payload placed on the first structure; the payload weight is transferred linearly through the legs to the second structure. The configuration of the legs and the second structure enable to the second structure to be placed on a surface to support the base assembly while minimizing the bending moment on the second structure.

Abstract: A simple-hinged flap assembly for a winged aircraft includes a simple-hinged flap having a leading airfoil section pivotably connected to a trailing airfoil section via a hinge, and an active flow control (AFC) actuator assembly. The assembly is connected to or integrally formed with the flap and includes upstream and downstream AFC actuators arranged in respective first and second rows, and collectively configured to provide first and second outlet mass flowrates. The downstream AFC actuators emit the second outlet mass flowrate at a rate that substantially exceeds the first outlet mass flowrate, such that the first outlet mass flowrate preconditions a boundary layer around the simple-hinged flap assembly. A winged aircraft includes a pneumatic power supply, fuselage, a wing connected to the fuselage, and the simple-hinged flap assembly.
