Abstract:
An electrical energy storage device is provided which has a pair of spaced aluminum-lithium alloy anodes with an active carbon cathode interposed therebetween and the anodes and cathodes are separated by an inert spacer material containing a fused salt electrolyte. This device is assembled by enclosing the cathode in a fiber mat, which functions as the spacer, positioning the cathode in a screen basket, closing the basket to contain the cathode, inserting the screen basket into a container, positioning an anode within the container on each side of the screen basket, and hermetically sealing said container.

An improved electrode material for electrical energy storage devices is provided by heating a carbonaceous material to provide a charred residue, then treating this charred residue in a fused salt bath under reducing and oxidizing (in the absence of oxygen) conditions. The resulting material contains occluded salts and these may, in a preferred embodiment, be removed.

The invention is the extrusion of sulfur from thiodinitriles to obtain the corresponding dinitrile by heating the thiodinitrile at a temperature of 200* to 700*C. For example, sulfur is extruded from thiodipropionitrile to obtain adiponitrile. This extrusion reaction can be either a strictly thermal reaction employing no other reactant or a reaction conducted in the presence of other gases, liquids or solids.

Molybdenum containing oxidation catalysts are prepared by reducing hexavalent molybdenum to a valence state below +6 prior to or during the catalyst preparation. Reproducible catalysts with superior catalytic activity are conveniently made by this process.
