Abstract:
A method and the apparatus to practice the method in which the drift of single channel analyzers is reduced. Essentially, this invention employs a time-sharing or multiplexing technique to insure that the outputs from two single channel analyzers (SCAS) maintain the same count ratio regardless of variations in the threshold voltage source or voltage changes. the multiplexing technique is accomplished when a flip flop, actuated by a clock, changes state to switch the output from the individual SCAS before these outputs are sent to a ratio counting scalar. In the particular system embodiment disclosed that illustrates this invention, the sulfur content of coal is determined by subjectiong the coal to radiation from a neturon producing source. A photomultiplier and detector system equates the transmitted gamma radiation to an analog voltage signal and sends the same signal, after amplification, to a SCA system that contains our invention. Therein, at least two single channel analyzers scan the analog signal over different parts of a spectral region. The two outputs may then be sent to a digital multiplexer so that the outputs may then be sent to a digital multiplexer so that the output from the multplexer contains counts falling within two distinct segments of the region. By dividing the counts from the multiplexer by each other, the precentage of sulfur within the coal sample under observation may be determined.
Abstract:
Particulate material is deposited in an elongated container by continuously and uniformly depositing the material in the container while repeatedly lifting and dropping (and impacting) the container and the particle delivery means. Post-impact vibration and bouncing are damped.

GOLD IS RECOVERED FROM ITS ORES BY TREATING THE ORES AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE WITH GASEOUS CHLORINE IN THE PRESENCE OF (1) A PROMOTER COMPRISING A COMPOUND OF IRON, ALUMINUM OR GALLIUM AND (2) ACTIVATED CARBON, WHEREBY THE COMPLEX AUMECL6, WHERE ME IS IRON, ALUMINUM OR GALLIUM, IS FORMED AND IS ADSORBED ON THE ACTIVATED CARBON. THE GOLD-LADEN ACTIVATED CARBON IS THEN SEPARATED FROM THE GANGUE BY FROTH FLOTATION AND THE GOLD RECOVERED FROM THE CARBON BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS.

Abstract:
A telephone visual paging system that is actuated by an audio signal. The audio input current is used to power two or more light emitting diodes which are housed on a telephone receiver. Other than the audio signal power supply, no separate power supply system is needed to power these light sources. By superimposing variations caused by the audio input signal on the periodic switching signals from a multivibrator, the light emitting diodes can generate a semaphore radiation action to get the visual attention of an observer. This invention is particularly useful in hazardous gaseous environments, like coal mines, where electric wiring connections and the possibility of ignitions from electric sources should be minimized.
Abstract:
An apparatus to indicate deformation of a surface such as the interior of a mine, to which it is attached. An anchor bolt assembly with one electrical contact is rigidly fixed into the surface. A movable pressure plate assembly with another electrical contact, engageable by the first contact on the bolt assembly is placed against the surface. When this plate is moved by surface deformations, it causes the contacts to engage each other which results in the actuation of a sensing device. The sensing device can either actuate a transmitter to transmit a frequency modulated signal of a fixed or variable frequency or it can actuate a recording device that records data on the deformation. Several extendable arms may also be included to actuate a transmitter when overhead rocks or other objects fall near the apparatus. The arms may be arranged in a spider-like pattern around the periphery of the pressure plate assembly to which it is pivotally attached. Two spaced electrical contact rings associated with the arms are closed when an object pivots one of the arms. This closure can then actuate the same transmitter the deformation plate could actuate which results in a fixed frequency warning signal being transmitted. A series of the signals from several transmitters may be fed to a common receiver. By making each signal different and associating the physical location of a given transmitter with a given signal, the deformation that occurs at a given point may be readily segregated from the others. This allows the sending of a warning signal or other type signal to persons in the danger zone.

In direct contact condensation system wherein vapor condenses upon a flowing shallow stream of cooler liquid, the flow of the uppermost layer of the liquid stream is disrupted without disrupting the flow of the main body of the stream so as to agitate and turn over the uppermost layer, and move the uppermost layer downward to a region where the natural turbulence of the flowing stream will further agitate and break up said layer.

A METHOD FOR RECOVERING METALS FROM A SOLUTION OR SLURRY COMPRISING COUNTERCURRENTLY CONTACTING THE SOLUTION OR SLURRY WITH AN ION EXCHANGE RESIN COLUMN OPERATING ON THE SOLUTION UPFLOW PRINCIPLE. THE ION EXCHANGE RESIN COLUMN IS CHARACTERIZED BY SUBDIVISION INTO A SERIES OF MULTIPLE VERTICAL SECTIONS EACH SEPARATED FROM THE OTHER BY A ZONE OF REDUCED DIAMETER. THE METHOD OF THE INVENTION IS PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE FOR RECOVERING URANIUM FROM SOLUTIONS OF LOW URANIUM CONTENT.
