Abstract: Methods and systems for defining characters, can involve selectively removing pixels from one or more characters and rendering a character with a user space equivalent to a device space. Multiple abutting non-line pixels can be removed among the pixels from the character(s). Furthermore, the character(s) including the multiple abutting non-line pixels as expected for the character(s) can be created prior to prior to selectively removing the pixels from the character(s). This approach can avoid partially marked pixels by setting user space equal to device space and then selectively removing pixels when printing microtext. Selective pixel removal allows for more white space and better recognition of characters such as, for example, “8” and “E”.

Abstract: A security apparatus, method and system for rendering a security mark, can involve providing a security mark with a metameric pair of infrared inks. A spectral reflectance of two metameric inks among the metameric pair of inks differs for CMYK for K in infrared. A first metameric ink among the metameric pair of infrared inks can be configured to include more K than a second metameric ink among the metameric pair of infrared inks, wherein when a document containing the security mark is scanned, and the number of K pixels in the first metameric ink is filtered to destroy the security mark when viewed through an infrared camera.

Abstract: An inkjet printer includes air baffles on opposite sides of each printhead in the process direction. The air baffle on the upstream side of the printheads directs a positive air flow toward a conveyor moving media past the printheads and the air baffle on the downstream side pulls a negative air flow on the opposite side. The positive and negative air flows produce an air flow across the nozzle plates of the printheads that sweep all of the ink drops of a sneeze pattern and satellite ink drops produced from the sneeze pattern ink drops into the air baffle pulling the negative air flow. A kit is provided to retroactively modify an existing inkjet printer to produce an air flow that sweeps the nozzle plate of a printhead between the air baffles of the kit.

Abstract: Apparatuses have a processing device that is operable with a connection to a physical cryptographic key device that has a valid cryptographic key. Such devices further include a connector that is adapted to connect to the physical cryptographic key device. The processing device is operatively connected to the connector. The processing device is adapted to change available functionality based on connection to, and disconnection from, the physical cryptographic key device.

Abstract: An antimicrobial composition is disclosed. The antimicrobial coating composition includes at least one cured phase change ink which may include one or more crosslinked polymers, a photoinitiator, a wax, a gellant, and an antimicrobial additive. The composition also includes an engineered surface topography formed by the cured phase change ink. A method of preparing a textured antimicrobial surface is also disclosed. The method may include designing a template having a texture, printing the template onto a substrate using an uncured antimicrobial ink, and providing a light source to crosslink the uncured antimicrobial ink.

Abstract: A multi-function device (MFD) is disclosed. For example, the MFD includes a local communication interface, a proximity sensor to detect a user within a detection range, a processor, and a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a plurality of instructions. The instructions when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform operations that include detecting the user within the detection range via the proximity sensor, scanning a mobile device of the user for a device identification via the local communication interface, determining that the device identification is associated with the user that is authorized on the MFD, and automatically logging the user into the MFD.

Abstract: A printer and method of operating the printer adjusts firing signal waveforms for inkjets that eject at least one ink drop into one or more ink images produced by the printer to reduce the ink drop variability of the ink drops ejected into the one or more images. A range of acceptable ink drop volumes is identified using a nominal ink drop volume and a maximum ink drop volume deviation. The firing signals for the inkjets outside of this identified range are adjusted to shift the ink drops ejected by these inkjets into the range of acceptable ink drop volumes.

Abstract: An inkjet printer prints on a first side of a media sheet less than all of the color separations in an image, generates a first set of image data of the printed color separations to identify image features, returns the partially printed media sheet to a position that precedes the print zone in the printer, generates a second set of image data of the partially printed media sheet before it reenters the print zone to identify the image features, compares the positions of the image features in the first set of image data to the positions of the image features in the second set of image data to register one or more color separations remaining to be printed with the color separations printed on the first side of the media sheet, and prints the remaining registered color separations on the first side of the partially printed media sheet.

Abstract: A method of making thermoplastic polymer particles may include mixing in an extruder a mixture comprising a thermoplastic polymer and a carrier fluid that is immiscible with the thermoplastic polymer at a temperature greater than a melting point or softening temperature of the thermoplastic polymer and at a shear rate sufficiently high to disperse the thermoplastic polymer in the carrier fluid; cooling the mixture to below the melting point or softening temperature of the thermoplastic polymer to form solidified particles comprising thermoplastic polymer particles having a circularity of 0.90 or greater and that comprise the thermoplastic polymer; and separating the solidified particles from the carrier fluid.
