Abstract: A material moving apparatus, and in particular, a material moving pump such as a manure pump. The pump includes a pumping chamber defined by interior chamber walls, and a piston or ram mounted for reciprocation in the chamber. The ram has side walls generally in conformance with the shape formed by the interior walls defining the chamber. The side walls of the ram are slotted or provided with grooves which induce turbulence in fluid flow between the side walls of the ram and the interior walls of the chamber to inhibit backflow of material from a position in front of the ram to a position behind the ram. The pump thus operates efficiently to pump material of low viscosity or material of low density.

Abstract: A reactor for hydrolytic splitting of cellulose under high pressure and heat has an inlet and outlet each with a cross-sectional area smaller than the cross-sectional area of the reactor. The pressure and heat in the reactor forms a cellulose plug within the inlet and the outlet. The inlet plug stops cellulose from escaping out the inlet. Cellulose begins to breakdown under heat, pressure, and if required an acid or a lubricant. The outlet plug slows downstream movement of cooking cellulose. Cellulose may be pre-treated by the addition of water, a weak acid, a lubricant, or a combination of the foregoing. The outer surface of the plug cooks faster than the inner core of the plug, becomes a liquefied slurry, and slides faster towards the outlet than the inner core.

Abstract: New nonwoven fibrous webs are taught which comprise a collected mass of a) directly formed fibers disposed within the web in a C-shaped cross-sectional configuration and b) staple fibers having a crimp of at least 15% dispersed among the directly formed fibers in an amount of at least 5% the weight of the directly formed fibers. The web is lofty but free of macrovoids. Preferably, the web has a filling ratio of at least 50 and a light transmittance variation of about 2% or less. Typically, fibers within the web are bonded together at points of fiber intersection, preferably with autogenous bonds, to provide a compression-resistant matrix. The webs are especially useful as acoustic and thermal insulation.

Abstract: A container having a base portion including four vertical square tube members of equal length with one tube member at each corner of the base portion, and bottom surfaces of the base portion sloping inwardly to an opening assembly at the bottom of the base portion that consists of a series of uniformly spaced openings closed by a spring loaded horizontally sliding door. The upper portion of the container is formed with four additional vertical square tube members of equal length that provide support for the upper sides of the container, with the upper side walls being pinned to the lower vertical tube members such that the four sides of the container can be rotated downwardly onto the base portion when the container is empty. When the side walls are rotated to an upright position the four upper sides interlock and are held in position by pressure within the container. The structure of the base portion allows lifting and transport by forklift, pallet jacks or similar devices. The spring loaded slide door assembly may be opened remotely with a line connected to a lever mechanism attached either to the container base or to the forklift to permit unloading of the container contents by the lift operator from the seat of the lift vehicle.

Abstract: A feed conveyor having reciprocating sidewalls to move the feed along and distribute it about a feed bunk. The conveyor has elongated substantially parallel sidewalls arranged lengthwise of and above the feed bunk. The sidewalls move toward one another to capture feed between them, then move forward to advance the feed along the bunk while holding it by friction. The sidewalls then are moved apart to release the feed and move back to the starting position. One sidewall can be driven while the other trails. The sidewalls can be laterally inclined to form a truncated V-shaped open bottom trough to advance the feed. The sidewalls are connected together by inverted U-shaped pins such that the trailing sidewall follows the driven sidewall.
