Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing friction at the interface between a liquid and a solid. A solid interface member includes a plurality of apertures over the entire surface which are to be in contact with the liquid. The apertures are of a size and dimension such that the surface tension of the liquid will not allow the liquid to pass through the apertures, but which will allow a gaseous material with less surface tension than the liquid to pass therethrough. The gaseous material is thereafter motivated through the apertures to interpose a gaseous layer at the liquid solid interface which reduces the drag coefficient therebetween, which would otherwise result from relative motion between the solid interface member and the liquid.
Abstract:
A holder for protection and handling of a brittle electrical conductor element, such as a ceramic superconductor, limited in its ability to withstand tensile and compression forces exerted thereon and bending along its axial length beyond a predetermined arcuate path. The holder has a flexible housing which encompasses and protects the superconductor element. A helically disposed strengthening element is integral with the housing. The strengthening element resists tensile forces exerted on the housing in an axial direction and resists radially imposed forces on the housing isolating the superconductor element from these forces. The strengthening element also provides for limited arcuate bending of the housing for limiting the bending beyond a predetermined arcuate path.

A union enabling a rigid pipe to replace a flexible hose in applications where there is no relative movement of the points connected by the pipe and union. The new union accommodates the movements required for installation and removal, and accommodates the tolerances that are encountered during all manufacturing and assembly steps.

There is disclosed herein an automotive window regulator and drive mechanism which includes a rotatable flexible drive shaft to transmit rotational forces from the regulator arm to a worm gear supported on a lower edge of the window. The worm gear engages a rack secured to a portion of the vehicle so as to vary the position of the window. In one embodiment, both electric motor drive and manual crank drive means are provided either of which may be selectively engaged to drive the rotatable flexible shaft. The regulator end of the flexible drive shaft may be supported in meshing engagement with a portion of the regulator drive gear by means of a pinion pivot arm which arm includes indexing gears to enable the flexible cable to track the worm gear thereby reducing the flexing of the flexible drive shaft.

A connector assembly 10 for use with tubular conduits 30 is disclosed which is a male portion that is put into a female portion. The male portion makes use of the end of the conduit itself, and the female portion only requires a stepped bore. The seal 50, stabilizing bushings areas 34 and retainer 138 are carried on the male portion. The seal 50 may be retained on the male, and the connection may be either a quick connect or require a tool to assemble. The connection may seal the highest pressures and withstand very high forces on the male and female portions. Also disclosed is the use of this connection in a multiple port device. The connection may be completed in the depth and diameter that is allotted to a "thread-in" or "flare" connection.

A fluid flow control apparatus 10 which uses a plurality of deformable metal springing arms 98, 108 to position a plurality of metal plates 40, 50, 70 within a chamber 34. The metal plates 40, 50, 70 define a plurality of flow paths to vary the amount of flow through the flow control apparatus 10. By changing the size and quantity of the various flow paths F.sub.1, F.sub.2, F.sub.3 and F.sub.4 the flow control apparatus can be tailored to each specific application. The fluid flow control apparatus thus has the durability advantages associated with metal flow controls by using metal spring arms instead of coil springs, and provides the smaller packaging advantages associated with molded rubber flow controls. The apparatus utilizes the deflection of the metal springs instead of the deformation of rubber which will change. The diameter of the apparatus can be as small as 3/8 inch larger than the inlet diameter, and have a length of as little as 3/8 inch.
