Abstract:
It is disclosed that sulfonate materials corresponding to the products of S03 sulfonation of composite mixtures of olefins which contain significant percentages of internal olefins and of vinylidene olefins in addition to vinyl olefins (COS) are superior in detergency to similar well-known materials obtained from sulfonation of substantially pure straight chain alpha olefins (AOS). A synergism is obtained with the COS materials in comparison to the AOS materials which is contrary to expectations based on numerous teachings that the products characteristic of those derived by sulfonation of non-vinyl olefins are inferior to the products characteristic of those derived by sulfonation of vinyl olefins. It is taught herein that the superior detergency mixtures rich in branched and internal structures (COS) have utility similar to the similar materials corresponding to sulfonation products of straight chain alpha olefins (AOS).
Abstract:
It is disclosed that aluminum alkoxides are hydrolyzed to produce alcohols and a selected water-soluble aluminum salt by performing the hydrolysis in an aqueous sulfurous acid system. The alcohols are readily separated from the aluminum salt solution following which the selected soluble aluminum salt is readily converted to an insoluble aluminum salt to facilitate its separation from water. The SO2 thus recovered is advantageously recycled for the hydrolysis of additional quantities of aluminum alkoxide.
Abstract:
It is disclosed that glycolic acid is readily produced in high yield by hydrolyzing glycolonitrile with an acid having a pKa of from about 1.5 to about 2.5, typically H3PO3 or H2SO3, at a temperature of from about 75 to about 175*C. Typically, the glycolonitrile is produced by reacting HCN and formaldehyde.

Abstract:
Hydrocarbyl aluminum compounds are separated from olefins readily by the use of 2:1 complexes of aluminum alkyls and various complexing agents such as sodium fluoride and sodium cyanide. An important aspect is that the process does not require pyrolysis cleavage of the complexes. An overall olefins process is disclosed wherein the aluminum hydrocarbyl compounds removed from the olefins are recovered and recycled.
