    Abstract: The present invention relates to a pre-paint composite comprising an aqueous slurry of TiO2 particles and attached and unattached polymeric binder, and a sufficient amount of a secondary alcohol ethoxylate of the formula C10-15H22-32O(CH2CH2O)xH to give 35 to 90 weight percent attachment of polymeric binder to the TiO2 particles, based on the weight of total polymeric binder in the pre-paint composite, where x is from 15 to 50; and the O(CH2CH2O)xH group is bonded to a CH group on the C10-15H22-32 chain. The present invention also relates to a coatings composition containing the composite as well as a process for preparing the pre-paint composite and the coatings composition.

    Abstract: Provided is polymer particle comprising (a) 40% to 85% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particle, a core polymer having Tg of −35° C. or lower; (b) 15% to 50% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particle, an intermediate polymer having Tg that is 20° C. or lower and that is higher than the Tg of the core polymer by 10° C. or more; (c) 5% to 30% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particle, a shell polymer having Tg of 50° C. or higher; wherein the shell polymer comprises polymerized units of all vinyl aromatic monomers in an amount of 1% or less, by weight based on the weight of the shell polymer.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of submicron-sized polymer particles and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the polymer particles or beads or both are functionalized with phosphorus acid groups. The composition of the present invention is useful for providing a matte finish on substrates, such as leather, textiles, wallboard, decorative coatings, concrete, and wood, with improved stain resistance. The present invention also relates to a leather substrate coated with a clear matte finish comprising an acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer film and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the film or the beads or both are functionalized with a phosphorus acid monomer.
