Abstract: Some implementations include a changeable tip of a microscope system for testing an end face of an optical fiber. The changeable tip may include a tip housing having an optical fiber interface at a first end of the housing and configured to be coupled with the end face of the optical fiber and a device interface configured to be coupled with a tip connection interface of an opto-mechanical assembly of the microscope system. The changeable tip also may include at least one tip orientation indicator associated with the tip housing and configured to interact with a tip connection interface of the opto-mechanical assembly to cause a signal indicating tip orientation information associated with the changeable tip to be provided to the imaging device.

The microscope may transmit light onto the shaped reflective surface and may receive reflected light from the ferrule endface and with a camera of the microscope.

Abstract: A microscope may receive a fiber optic connector via a connector adapter that includes an opening and may align a ferrule of the fiber optic connector with the opening of the connector adapter, where the ferrule includes a ferrule endface. The microscope may transmit light onto the ferrule endface and may receive reflected light, as an image of the ferrule endface, with a camera of the microscope. The microscope may determine intensities of brightness of the image and may create a topographical map of the intensities of the brightness of the image. The microscope may determine a radius and an apex of the ferrule endface based on the topographical map and may calculate an apex offset of the ferrule endface based on the radius and the apex of the ferrule endface. The microscope may perform one or more actions based on the apex offset of the ferrule endface.

Abstract: An optical fiber inspection system may include an alignment guide having a sleeve portion and a mechanical key structure. The sleeve portion may comprise a first opening arranged to be proximal to one or more optical components in an inspection device and a second opening arranged to be distal to the one or more optical components when the alignment guide is removably engaged with the inspection device. The mechanical key structure may be located adjacent to the second opening and have a shape to engage a geometry of one or more recesses in a bulkhead. Accordingly, the alignment guide may stabilize the inspection device at a particular angle relative to an end face of an object in a field of view of the one or more optical components when a shaft of the inspection device is inserted into the bulkhead.

The device may output a result of the set of analyses for display.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for inspection, under a microscope, of end connectors of fiber optic cables are provided. In one aspect, a light ring including a circular array of light sources provides darkfield illumination to an end connector being inspected under a microscope. Each of the light sources may be lit in series and the resulting shadows may be used to identify dirt on the end connector, as well as to determine whether any dirt identified on the end connector can be cleaned off. In another aspect, a light ring combined with a redirection ring (e.g., a reflector and/or refractor ring) may provide darkfield illumination. In yet another aspect, a series of images may be captured and analyzed to automatically identify dirt on the end connector, as well as to determine whether any identified dirt can be cleaned off.

Abstract: A tip for an optical fiber inspection device includes a body portion that includes a first opening, a second opening, and a chamber that extends within the body portion from the first opening to the second opening. The body portion is configured to allow illumination light to enter through the first opening and to propagate to, and impinge on, a portion of a surface of the chamber. The portion of the surface of the chamber is configured to redirect the illumination light to allow the illumination light to propagate to, and exit through, the second opening and thereby propagate to an angled end face of an optical fiber. The body portion is configured to allow reflection light, reflected by the angled end face of the optical fiber, to enter through the second opening and to propagate through, and exit from, the chamber.

The opto-mechanical assembly may include an imaging device configured to capture an image of an end face of an optical fiber and a focus assembly comprising a system of lenses configured to focus the image of the end face of the optical fiber for capture by the imaging device; and at least one focus position encoder associated with the focus assembly and configured to determine at least one focus position measurement associated with a position of at least one lens of the system of lenses. The device may use the at least one focus position measurement to determine a magnification associated with the focus assembly.

Abstract: In some implementations, an optical component of a microscope may capture an image of a profile of a ferrule and a connector of an optical fiber based on the ferrule being received by a first opening of a first connector adapter of the microscope. A mechanical axis of the ferrule may be orthogonal to an optical path from a camera of the microscope to the ferrule when the ferrule is received by the first opening. One or more processors associated with the microscope may process the image to determine a measurement of a chamfer of the ferrule. The optical component may capture an image of an endface of the ferrule based on the ferrule being received by a second opening of a second connector adapter. The mechanical axis of the ferrule may be axially aligned with the optical path when the ferrule is received by the second opening.
