Abstract: A spray nozzle for discharging liquid in a spray pattern onto a ground surface includes a structure to obtain optimum diffusion of the liquid droplets in the spray pattern. The spray nozzle includes a diffuser plate having an upwardly extending diffuser blade thereon. The diffuser plate and blade are adjustable vertically and longitudinally in the discharge end of the nozzle to enable variation in the diffusion characteristics of the liquid discharged from the nozzle. The diffuser plate is also removable for replacement with other plates having alternative diffuser blades. The structure enables variation in the spray pattern of the liquid passing between the diffuser blade and the inner surfaces of the side walls of the nozzle by changing the location of the diffuser plate and blade in relation to the discharge end of the side walls of the nozzle or by using another plate having a different diffuser blade for different diffusion characteristics.

Abstract: An orifice holding spring disk. The spring disk is utilized to retain orifice(s) against a smooth flat platen surface. The spring disk may further comprise an inlet flow conditioning nozzle, provided in (a) a flow collimating configuration to produce a coherent flow waterjet, or (b) in a de-collimating configuration to produce a divergent waterjet. The spring disk has an annular outer ring, one or more through-holes, and counterbores to form wells in the spring disk. The wells are slightly larger in diameter than the particular orifice to be mounted and slightly shallower (in the water flow direction) than the thickness of the orifice. A nozzle cap compresses the platen and spring disc against a high pressure inlet tube. The outer diameter of the spring disk is forced to flex to the cap surface while the center portion is restrained by the orifice that is resting on the platen.

Abstract: A liquid jet nozzle for forming a high velocity liquid jet from a pressurized liquid, includes a monolithic Nitinol body having an input side and an output side. A tapering lead-in channel opening in the input side and tapers to a central web, through which extends a small diameter orifice, communicating through the web from the lead-in channel to an egress opening in the output side of the body. The orifice interacts with the high pressure liquid to shape the pressurized liquid into a narrow, high velocity liquid jet which exits the body through the egress opening. A surface layer of nickel titanium oxide on the Nitinol in the orifice provides enhanced resistance to erosion by the high pressure liquid.

Abstract: A nozzle which produces laminar fluid flow, which may be used in fountains and water displays, is disclosed. The nozzle disclosed reduces the turbulence of the fluid flowing through the nozzle by using a material which has randomly-arranged filaments for dividing the velocity components of the incoming fluid stream into smaller components. Some of the velocity components cancel each other thereby presenting a more uniform velocity profile, reducing the turbulence of the fluid, and allowing laminar flow at higher flow rates than would otherwise be possible.

Abstract: Water displays utilizing laminar flow streams to create dynamic arch-like displays are disclosed. The laminar flow nozzle is mounted on an assembly for changing the angle and repositioning the laminar flow nozzle so that the laminar flow stream appears to eminate from a fixed location at different angles, which allows varying the characteristics of the display in a dynamic manner. Simultaneous control of the nozzle position and angle with control of the pressure of water supplied thereto allows the stream to be varied to create a dynamic display with the stream returning to a sink region at a fixed position independent of the height of the water stream. Illuminating the laminar flow stream internally causes the same to glow like a fluorescent tube with the color being supplied thereto, changeable as desired. Intersecting laminar flow streams provide interesting water formations, with the intersections of two streams of different colors causing still a third color at the flared region of the intersection. Features of the invention are useable independently, all in the same apparatus, or in various combinations as desired.

Abstract: A high-velocity liquid jet cutting nozzle and housing for use with high-pressure fluid sources is disclosed. The nozzle housing eliminates the use of elastically deformable collars by having a nozzle mount of a material which yields only under the pressure of the liquid in the system. The nozzle mount extends downstream of the nozzle element and provides a yielding support, under pressure, for the nozzle element in the direction of fluid flow. The nozzle element, constructed from a jewel, typically sapphire, is thereby supported in a mounting element in a yieldable high-pressure seal when in operation. Different configurations can be used to produce a variety of cutting streams, depending on the material to be cut.

Abstract: A high velocity, constant flow, liquid jet cutting apparatus comprising a source of high pressure fluid, a jet nozzle, and a high pressure conduit to carry the fluid from the source to the jet nozzle. Immediately upstream of the jet nozzle is a liquid collimating device comprising a housing interconnected between the conduit and the nozzle and defining a flow collimating chamber directly upstream of the nozzle, through which the high pressure liquid is delivered to the nozzle. The cross sectional area of the flow collimating chamber is at least greater than 100 times the cross sectional area of the nozzle opening, and desirably in the order of four hundred times as great or more. The resulting liquid jet has relatively little dispersion of the liquid and is capable of effectively cutting a relatively narrow kerf with a high quality finish and little, if any, wetting.
