Abstract: Barrier films are prepared from a blend of two high density polyethylene blend components and a high performance organic nucleating agent. The two high density polyethylene blend components have substantially different melt indices. Large reductions in the moisture vapor transmission rate of the film are observed in the presence of the nucleating agent when the melt indices of the two blend components have a ratio of greater than 10/1. The resulting barrier films are suitable for the preparation of packaging for dry foods such as crackers and breakfast cereals.

Abstract: A gas barrier film is provided comprising a base film of polyester provided, on at least one of its surfaces, with a deposited layer of an inorganic compound and a gas barrier layer of a copolymer resin composition formed on the former. The gas barrier layer is produced from a mixture of a base material composed at least of the two components of (a) an unsaturated nitrile that accounts for 10% to 30% by mass of the copolymer and (b) an unsaturated compound with a hydroxyl group that accounts for 30% to 70% by mass of the copolymer; (c) a curing agent that contains a compound with an isocyanate group; and (d) a compound that has either two or more carboxylic acid groups or one or more carboxylic anhydride groups.

Abstract: The present invention provides compositions useful as a barrier layer in, for example, packaging products. The compositions generally comprise a blend of (i) a polyester material, preferably an aromatic polyester resin such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and (ii) a vinyl alcohol material. The blend optionally may further comprise (iii) a polyolefin material (preferably a functionalized polyolefin material, e.g., a BYNEL material); and/or (iv) a polyamide material (preferably an amorphous polyamide material, e.g., a GRIVORY material), that optionally further comprises an oxygen scavenging material. The present invention also provides containers (e.g., containers formed by expansion of preforms) having a multilayered body-forming portion including: a core layer comprising the aforementioned blend, and inner and outer layers of a formable polymer composition. The present invention also provides methods of making such containers.
