Abstract:
Face type centrifuge sealing assembly having a pair of preloaded anti-friction bearings between the rotating and stationary portions thereof. The inner races of the bearings are secured to the centrifuge rotor, and the outer races are urged apart, or preloaded, by a resilient member disposed between them. In the preferred method of assembly, the outer races are secured to the stationary portion of the centrifuge after they are preloaded.
Abstract:
A stylus arm adapted to track along a rectilinear marking path extending across at least one channel of a chart recorder. The free end of the stylus arm carries a stylus adapted to engage the chart, and a guide bearing adapted to engage an elongate guide surface to guide the stylus along the rectilinear path. The constrained end of the stylus arm includes a U-shaped portion which engages a recessed channel in a mounting pin secured to the support platform, so that the stylus arm is both pivotably and slidably mounted with respect to the platform. Means are provided for driving the free end of the stylus arm from one side of the channel to the other, with the effective length of the stylus arm being extended as it approaches the outer reaches of the channel to permit the stylus to track along the rectilinear marking path.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a method and apparatus for inducing the sensation of intelligible hearing by direct electrical excitation of the auditory nerve endings distributed along the basilar membrane within the cochlea. An electrode is positioned within the lower scala of the cochlea by insertion through the round window. The electrode consists of a resilient base member shaped to conform to the inner surface of the lower scala, such base member extending along the basilar membrane. The base member retains a pair of conductors which extend parallel to the length of the basilar membrane. Means are also provided for transmitting an excitation signal to a receiver implanted with and connected to the conductors. Several configurations for the electrode are disclosed as well as several techniques for the excitation thereof.
Abstract:
A darkfield type illumination device for performing slide agglutination tests or the like. The device comprises a casing having an opening therein. A transparent slide having a reaction area thereon is mounted on the casing with the reaction area positioned over the opening. A nonreflective surface is provided in the casing below the opening. Illumination from the light source is transmitted in two paths extending from opposite sides of and below said opening upwardly at an angle to the opening. Such angle is between about 30* and 35* to provide the maximum benefit of particle illumination of material in the reaction area of the slide and darkfield effect of the device. Preferably the two paths of illumination pass through only corresponding onehalf sections of the reaction area of the slide to provide enhanced illumination of the particles.
Abstract:
A slide selector switch including a plurality of independently removable slide assembly modules mounted within a housing, with each module having electrical contacts adapted to engage an etched printed circuit board at the rear of the housing. Each module includes a non-signal carrying slide supporting bar and at least one slide which supports the electrical contacts and is adapted for positive detenting to multiple switch positions along the bar. Each module is otherwise provided with a targeting arrangement which produces a highly visible display of an indicia associated with the selected switch position. The slide selector switch enables a high number of positive circuit selections to be made from a small panel area. Furthermore the slide assembly modules are readily removable from the switch housing for replacement, and such removal does not disturb the circuitry of the circuit board or wiring attached thereto, since the modules have no signal carrying member other than the electrical contacts.
Abstract:
A single rotary cam in a liquid sample dilutor has multiple mechanical actuator program cycle profiles, which during one cam cycle sequentially actuate the cam arc intervals which determine the liquid volume inputs into and the outputs from a mixing cup in which a selected sample liquid volume, a selected diluent liquid volume, the sample and diluent liquid mixture volume, the diluted liquid sample volume aspiration time interval, the waste diluted sample liquid volume removal, and the diluent liquid volume waste rinse and ejection are controlled. The cam member mechanically actuates the pistons of the three liquid volume measuring syringes, the system slider valve, the aspirator probe, and the sample probe, operatively cooperating in sample and diluent volume measurement, and diluted sample volume withdrawal from the dilutor.
Abstract:
A demountable sample cell holder and cell is provided to adapt liquid scintillation counters for chemiluminescence measurements. The cell holder is cylindrical and mounts in one of the photomultiplier apertures. A sample cell is mounted within the cylinder by pliable spacers and is connected to inlet and outlet fillings on the cell holder by coiled black tubing. The cell is aluminized to enhance photon transfer efficiency and painted black. The holder is formed into two sections which may be unscrewed so that differing size cells may be utilized.
Abstract:
Long pass optical filters for the infrared region and methods of making the same are disclosed which utilize a transmitting matrix of high and low refractive index materials for selectively scattering all wavelengths shorter than a critical wavelength and which have a relatively sharp cut-on front. By the inclusion of materials having absorption bands at wavelengths longer than the cut-on wavelength of the scattering medium, the cut-on front may be sharpened and positioned over a wide range to provide a filter having a preselected cut-on wavelength and cut-on front. The absorbing materials may include one or more hygroscopic materials whose particles tend to coalesce when finely divided. By adding small quantities of a highly refined mineral oil and mulling before die pressing while heating, these materials may be evenly distributed throughout the area of the filter.
Abstract:
A polarographic sensor comprising a pair of electrodes joined by an electrolyte with a multi-layer gas permeable-essentially ion impermeable membrane separating the electrodes and electrolyte from the sample medium. The layers of the membrane are held together so as to prevent migration of electrolyte therebetween to the region overlying the sensing electrode and to prevent the trapping of gas or liquid between the layers in such region. The outer layer of the membrane is preferably formed of silicone rubber while the next layer is formed of a material which is less permeable to gas and water vapor than the outer membrane, for example Teflon. A polarographic sensor employing such a membrane exhibits good time response and minimal flow sensitivity.
Abstract:
A pressure measuring system including a light source and a pressure sensitive membrane illuminated by the light source and adapted to reflect the light in a manner dependent upon the pressure being sensed. A sensor is illuminated by the reflected light and includes a photosensitive detector connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit lacking diagonal bilateral symmetry.
