Abstract:
The invention provides improved methods for reducing polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode fiber by spinning the fiber during the drawing process in accordance with a spin function having sufficient harmonic content to achieve low levels of PMD for commercial fibers for which the beat lengths of the fibers, including the beat lengths of different portions of the fibers, are variable and thus not readily known in advance. The spin functions of the invention take advantage of certain resonances in energy transfer between polarization modes to achieve substantial reductions in PMD for a wide range of beat lengths. Examples of suitable spin functions include frequency-modulated and amplitude-modulated sine waves.
Abstract:
A method of modifying programs and databases having abbreviated date fields to achieve year 2000 compliancy includes examining an original database to ascertain the location of date fields, creating a supplementary PALM file that includes fully expanded date fields representative of corresponding date fields in the original database and modifying instructions or modules of the original program to access the PALM file for date information instead of the original database. The PALM file contains fully expanded date representations of abbreviated date fields of the original database. The PALM file also includes record identifiers and field identifiers to enable the modified program to access the required date information. Portions of the program requiring modification are identified by scanning for keywords that are generated from an examination of the database and/or from field layout definitions. The program is also examined for related keyword constructs or redefinitions found in the program itself. When converted, the modified program accesses the PALM file for date processing and accesses the original database for other processing steps. Further, a representative database having expanded date entries may be created based on examining a sample of an original database, and used by a modified legacy program to attain year 2000 compliancy.
Abstract:
A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link. Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

The method enables a computational system to determine the periods between dates in a non-ambiguous manner and yet advantageously uses the original database to retain system compatibility.
Abstract:
A low loss fiber optic coupler of the type wherein a plurality of single-mode optical fibers are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. Each fiber includes a core and a cladding, the lowest refractive index of the fiber claddings being n.sub.2. Each of the output fibers of the coupler further includes a surface region of refractive index n.sub.4 that inhibits the coupling of light to lossy composite modes, n.sub.4 being lower than n.sub.2.
Abstract:
A monolithic, environmentally stable Mach-Zehnder device is formed by threading first and second dissimilar optical fibers through the bore of a glass tube. The tube is evacuated and heated to collapse it onto the fibers. The tube is further heated and stretched at two spaced locations to form two couplers that are joined by the two optical fibers. The fibers have different propagation constants in the region between the two couplers, whereby there is a relative delay in the optical signal propagating in one of the fibers with respect to the optical signal propagating in the other fiber.
Abstract:
A hydrolyzing flame technique is used to build up glass soots of at least two different compositions upon a rotating starting member. The process is repeated until the soots define at least one helically-oriented body of soot of one composition completely enveloped by a soot of a second composition. The soot-covered starting member is then subjected to heat to fuse it whereupon the soots are fused into compositions exhibiting different indices of refraction. The member can then be drawn into a elongate structure comprising an optical waveguide extending helically through the body of the structure.

The fiber may be coupled to optical components in systems to provide single polarization in the band. A method for manufacturing the fiber is also provided.
Abstract:
According to the present invention the optical fiber includes a core with a first refractive index (n1) and the innermost core region with the refractive index n0, a cladding surrounding the core, the cladding having a third refractive index (n3), wherein n1>n3 and n0 n2. It is preferable that at least one of the core, innermost core region and/or moat has a non-circular shape.
