Abstract: In order to maintain performance during wireless communication, a transmitting electronic device may concurrently and independently communicate redundant information to a receiving electronic device. In particular, information associated with a data stream may be communicated to the receiving electronic device using one or more channels by two radios using one or more wireless local area network communication protocols. The packets transmitted by the radios may preferentially include the same information. Moreover, the transmitting electronic device may attempt to maintain the redundant communication if a performance metric associated with the one or more channels degrades. For example, the transmitting electronic device may transfer communication to a different channel or may compress the information in the packets in the one or more channels if the throughput drops below a threshold value. Furthermore, the concurrent communication may allow the transmitting electronic device determine link quality without disrupting the communication of the information.

Abstract: An electronic device may exchange packets with a second electronic device. These packets may include transmit times, based on a given clock in a given electronic device when the packets were transmitted. Moreover, when the packets are received by the electronic device, the electronic device may store associated receive times based on a clock in the electronic device. Using minimum time differences between the transmit and receive times, the electronic device may calculate a time offset between the electronic device and the second electronic device, which may then be used to determine future times in a clock domain of the second electronic device. Moreover, the electronic device may provide additional packets to the second electronic device, where a given additional packet includes audio data, and a playback time, corresponding to a given future time, when the audio data is to be played back by the second electronic device.

Abstract: An audio/video (A/V) hub that aggregates electronic devices is described. In particular, the A/V hub may measure sound, corresponding to audio content, output by electronic devices (such as electronic devices that include speakers). Then, the A/V hub may aggregate the electronic devices into two or more subsets based on the measured sound. Moreover, the A/V hub may determine, for the subsets, playback timing information, which may specify playback times when the electronic devices in a given subset are to playback the audio content. Next, the A/V hub may transmit, to the electronic devices, one or more frames that include the audio content and playback timing information, where the playback times of the electronic devices in at least the given subset have a temporal relationship so that the playback of the audio content by the electronic devices in the given subset is coordinated.

Abstract: An electronic device that performs self-configuration of a group of speakers is described. The electronic device may provide instructions for a set of second electronic devices to perform round-robin measurements in which, iteratively, each of the set of second electronic devices outputs sound while a remainder of the set of second electronic devices perform acoustic measurements. Then, the electronic device may receive information that specifies the acoustic measurements associated with the set of second electronic devices. Based at least in part on locations of the set of second electronic devices and the acoustic measurements, the electronic device may calculate acoustic radiation patterns of the set of second electronic devices, where a given acoustic radiation pattern includes a beam having a principal direction. Next, the electronic device may provide audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation patterns for the set of second electronic devices.

Abstract: An electronic device that dynamically adapts sound based at least in part on spatial information determined from ambient or background sound is described. Based at least in part on sound measurements corresponding to ambient noise in an environment, which may include a second electronic device, the electronic device may determine a characteristic of the environment. For example, the characteristic may include: a size of the environment, an acoustic mode of the environment and/or a reverberation time of the environment, which is associated with at least a frequency. Then, based at least in part on the determined characteristics, the electronic device may calculate an acoustic radiation pattern. Next, the electronic device may provide audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation pattern for the second electronic device.

Abstract: A portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display (such as a cellular telephone) provides a wireless remote control for an entertainment device (such as a consumer-electronic device). Based on device-state information that specifies a current state of the entertainment device (which is received from an audio/video (A/V) hub that communicates with the entertainment device) and one or more related states of the entertainment device, the portable electronic device may generate a user interface that includes one or more virtual command icons. Note that the one or more related states are related to the current state in a state diagram by corresponding operations that transition the entertainment device from the current state to the one or more related states. Then, the portable electronic displays the user interface on the touch-sensitive display. In this way, the portable electronic device dynamically adapts the user interface.

Abstract: An electronic device that obtains a set of remote-control commands is described. During operation, the electronic device may receive an image associated with a second electronic device, where a brand and a model of the second electronic device are initially unknown to the electronic device. Then, the electronic device may perform image analysis on the image to determine at least the brand of the second electronic device. Moreover, the electronic device may access, based at least in part on the determined brand, the set of remote-control commands that are associated with the second electronic device. Next, the electronic device may store the set of remote-control commands in memory.Subsequently, when the electronic device receives user-interface activity information associated with a portable electronic device that specifies selection of the second electronic device, the electronic device may provide the set of remote-control commands to the second electronic device.

Abstract: An audio/video (A/V) hub that coordinates playback of audio content is described. In particular, the A/V hub may calculate current time offsets between clocks in electronic devices and a clock in the A/V hub based on differences between receive times when frames are received from electronic devices and expected transmit times of the frames. For example, the expected transmit times may be based on coordination of clocks in the electronic devices and a clock in the A/V hub at a previous time and a predefined transmit schedule of the frames. Then, the A/V hub may transmit, to the electronic devices, one or more frames that include audio content and playback timing information, which may specify playback times when the electronic devices are to playback the audio content based on the current time offsets.
