Abstract: A multiview display and method employ light valves configured to be driven according to a polarity inversion protocol along with multibeam emitters arranged in offset rows. The multiview display includes an array of the multiview pixels comprising the light valves and a multibeam backlight having a plurality of the multibeam emitters arranged in the offset rows. A method of multiview display operation includes emitting directional light beams using an array of multibeam elements in offset rows and modulating the directional light beams using an array of light valves to display an image. Sets of light valves of the light valve array correspond to multiview pixels of the multiview display and the light valve array is driven according to a polarity inversion protocol. In both the multiview display and the method, adjacent offset rows are offset by a distance between repeating polarities of the plurality inversion protocol in a row direction.

The contextual lightfield display system includes a multiview display configured to provide the lightfield display modes and a lightfield mode selector configured to determine the display context and to select a lightfield display mode using the determined display context. The contextual lightfield multiview display includes multibeam elements configured to provide directional light beams and light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams as a multiview image. Selectable lightfield display modes may include a stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display mode, a unidirectional parallax display mode, a full parallax display mode, and a two-dimensional (2D) display mode.

Abstract: A light concentrating backlight includes a light guide to guide light and a diffraction grating configured to diffractively couple out a portion of the guided light as diffractively coupled-out light and to concentrate the diffractively coupled-out light into an eyebox. A near-eye display system includes the light guide and the diffraction grating, and further includes a light valve array configured to modulate the diffractively coupled-out light to form an image in the eyebox. The formed image is configured to be viewable within the eyebox by a user.

Abstract: Multiview displays include a reflective support structure located between a backlight and a screen. The backlight includes a plate light guide configured to couple out light that propagates within the plate light guide using multibeam elements. The reflective support structure reflects light incident on a portion of the surface that abuts the reflective support structure back into the plate light guide. The screen includes an array of multiview pixels configured to modulate coupled out light to create a multiview image.

Abstract: Time-multiplexed backlighting includes a time-multiplexed light source to provide a light beam having a first non-zero propagation angle during a first time interval and a second non-zero propagation angle during a second time interval. Abstract: A dual layer backlight employs a first planar backlight to emit light and a second planar backlight to provide a plurality of coupled-out light beams. The second planar backlight includes a plate light guide and a multibeam diffraction grating configured to diffractively couple out a portion of a guided light beam within the plate light guide as the plurality of coupled-out light beams. A light beam of the coupled-out light beam has a different principal angular direction from other light beams of the coupled-out light beam plurality. A two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) mode-switchable electronic display includes the dual layer backlight and a light valve array configured to selectively modulate emitted light as 2D pixels in a first mode and the coupled-out light beams as 3D pixels corresponding to the different 3D views in a second mode of the electronic display.
