Abstract: 949,749. Laminates and laminating. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. Sept. 21, 1962 [Sept. 27, 1961], No. 36044/62. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] An adhesive tape, particularly for sealing the edges of cartons, comprises two paper or other layers 10, 11 (shown in fragmentary end view in Fig. 2) secured together by adhesive, such as a polyamide or polyvinyl acetate, along thin margins leaving an unsecured centre region 13, and having on the side coated with pressuresensitive adhesive 14 one or more, preferably two or three, reinforcing threads 15, 16, 17, comprising fine filaments of nylon, glass or cotton, but preferably of rayon, having little or zero twist and dressed, preferably immediately before application, with a size such as a polybutadiene/styrene latex or polyvinyl chloride/acetate. The threads are stated to be flattened when the tape is rolled up. The threads facilitate the tidy removal of the tape from cartons, for which purpose (a) the whole tape may be removed by grasping the threads at one end, to permit which a portion of the carton is painted with a greasy agent, or (b) the end of the tape may be slit on either side of the threads, which may then be torn from the carton and the tape. In apparatus for making the tape, preferably in the form of wide webs subsequently slit, a paper web 46, Fig. 9, is adhesive-coated in strips by apparatus 47 and is formed into a laminate with a web 45, the laminate being dried on a heated roller 50 and in a chamber 51, coated with pressuresensitive adhesive at 52 and united at 57 with groups of threads 53, 54, 55 which have been sized at 56, the completed web being dried in chamber 58 and wound up at 59.
