Abstract:
A method of detecting loose rock in excavated passages through subterranean structures by an analysis of thermal conditions at the surfaces of said passages measured with infrared responsive instruments.
Abstract:
Power system phase and frequency are telemetered by amplitude modulating a carrier wave. In the modulating process a sinusoidal input is shaped to a square waveform and filtered through a bandpass filter. The filter output is a high frequency carrier wave ringing at the input frequency. For demodulation, the carrier wave is rectified and filtered through a low-pass filter, resulting in an approximately sinusoidal signal at the input frequency. After conversion to a sawtooth wave, the signal synchronizes an electronic telephone ringer, generating an output signal at station service voltage and frequency.
Abstract:
An urban domestic water distribution system and its associated ground mass is used as a heat sink for waste heat produced by industrial processes. A domestic water stream is utilized as cooling water for waste heat-producing processes and is thereafter introduced into the distribution system.

SOLID WASTES ARE HEATED TO 500*C.-675*C. AT 10003000 P.S.I.G. IN PRESENCE OF GAS CONTAINING AT LEAST 90 MOLE PERCENT HYDROGEN TO CONVERT SAID WASTES TO A METHANEAND ETHANE-CONTAINING GAS HAVING NO CONDENSABLE OILS AND TARS. THE CARBONACEOUS RESIDUE IS ALSO FREE OF TARS AND OILS,
Abstract:
The formation of high pressure seals for water equilibrated, hollow fiber membranes is effected by injecting a solution of gelatin around the active membrane area, chilling the solution to solidify the gelatin and immobilize the water, washing the ends or inactive area of the membrane with warm water, drying the ends, and casting a seal on the solidified gelatin surface. The gelatin is removed by heating and washing the fibers.
Abstract:
Concentric electrode pairs of opposite polarity improve the efficiency of a spark-gap acoustic source for marine seismic profiling. One electrode of a pair is tubular; the other is rodlike and positioned axially within the tubular electrode. Among the benefits resulting from the concentric electrode configuration are constant output, directional control, high frequency, efficiency, and a high repetition rate.
Abstract:
Cu2O is precipitated from a copper chelate solution by the addition of alkaline material and a reductant. The stability constant of the chelate must be more than 5.
Abstract:
A METHOD FOR CLEANING AND REJUVENATING A USED REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANCE BY TREATING THE MEMBRANE IN SITU WITH A SOLUTION OF OXALIC ACID. NOT ONLY ARE DELETERIOUS DEPOSITS REMOVED FROM THE MEMBRANE, BUT THE ORGINAL OSMOTIC PROOPERTIES OF THE MEMBRANE MAY BE PARTIALLY RESTORED. THE MEMBRANE PROPERTIES MAY BE FURTHER IMPROVED BY A SUBSEQUENT TREATMENT WITH A SWELLING AGENT OR A HOT WATER SOLUTION.
Abstract:
A METHOD OF ELECTROWINNING BERYLLIUM FROM A FUSED SALT ELECTROLYTE CONTAINING BERYLLIUM FLUORIDE COMPRISING ELECTROLYZING AT A TEMPERATURE BELOW THE MELTING POINT OF THE BERYLLIUM, FOLLOWED BY HEATING A MIXTURE OF THE FUSED SALT AND BERYLLIUM METAL TO A TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE MELTING POINT OF BERYLLIUM TO COALESCE THE BERYLLIUM. THE BERYLLIUM METAL FINDS UTILITY IN A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS WHERE HIGH MELTING TEMPERATURE, LIGHT WEIGHT, HIGH STRENGTH, GOOD THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY, LOW THERMAL NEUTRON ABSORPTION CORSS SECTION, AND HIGH SCATTERING CROSS SECTION ARE REQUIRED, E.G., IN SPACE VEHICLES AND NUCLEAR REACTORS.
