Abstract: A storage system includes a framework structure, at least one container lift device, and a plurality of storage containers. The framework structure includes multiple storage columns, in which the storage containers are stored on top of one another in vertical stacks. The container lift device includes a lifting frame for releasable connection to one of the storage containers when the lifting frame is lowered into one of the storage columns to retrieve said storage container. An outer periphery of each storage container includes a vertical guiding pin recess at each of four container corners. A vertical guiding pin is provided at each of four frame corners of the lifting frame. A lower part of at least two of the guiding pins have a container support portion including a container support surface.

Abstract: An automated grid-based storage and retrieval system includes a framework structure, a plurality of storage containers, a container handling vehicle, and a control system. The framework structure includes upright members and a rail system including a grid of horizontal rails provided at upper ends of the upright members. The framework structure defines a storage volume comprising storage columns arranged adjacent one another below the horizontal rails, the grid defining a plurality of grid positions. The plurality of storage containers are stacked on top of one another in the storage columns to form a plurality of stacks in the storage columns. The container handling vehicle includes a lifting device which can be lowered from the container handling vehicle for picking up a storage container. The control system includes records of, for each grid position including a stack of storage containers, a grid coordinate and a level of the storage containers in the stack of the storage column corresponding to that grid position. A method for determining a position of a container handling vehicle on a rail system of an automated grid-based storage and retrieval system includes, for at least one grid position, determining a level of the storage containers in the stack by lowering the lifting device of a first container handling vehicle until a storage container is detected at a vertical position by the lifting device; and determining, using the control system, a grid position of the first container handling vehicle through matching the detected vertical position with a record of a grid position having the same level of storage containers in a stack.

Abstract: A method for handling malfunctioning vehicles (240,340) on a rail system (108,308) constituting part of a storage and retrieval system (1) configured to store a plurality of stacks (107) of storage containers (106), wherein the storage and retrieval system (1) comprises—a plurality of remotely operated vehicles (230,330,240,340,250,350) configured to move laterally on the rail system (108,308) and—a control system (109) for monitoring and controlling wirelessly movements of the plurality of vehicles (230,330,240,340,250,350), the control system (109) forms by wireless data communication at least the following steps: A. registering an anomaly in an operational condition of a vehicle (this 240,340) on the rail system (108,308), B. registering the vehicle with the anomalous operational condition as a malfunctioning vehicle (240,340), C. bringing the malfunctioning vehicle (240,340) to a halt, D. registering a halt position of the malfunctioning vehicle (240,340) relative to the supporting rail system (108,308), E. setting up a two-dimensional shutdown zone (225) within the rail system (108,308) into which the malfunctioning vehicle (240,340) is halted and F. updating movement pattern of the plurality of remotely operated vehicles (230,330, 250,350) outside the two-dimensional shutdown zone (225) such that entrance into the two-dimensional shutdown zone (225) is avoided.
