Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument is disclosed including a pencil-grip handle, a shaft coupled to the pencil-grip handle, and an end effector coupled to the shaft. The end effector includes a body, a source electrode, and one or more return electrodes. The source electrode and the one or more return electrodes are configured to provide a multi-phase bipolar electrosurgical signal to tissue. The one or more return electrodes each comprise a first return electrode and a second return electrode. The electrosurgical instrument further includes an electrosurgical generator coupled to the end effector. The electrosurgical generator is configured to produce the multi-phase bipolar electrosurgical signal including a first phase, a second phase, and a third phase. The electrosurgical generator is coupled to the source electrode, the first return electrode, and the second return electrode. The first phase, the second phase, and the third phase are combined to generate the multi-phase bipolar electrosurgical signal.

Abstract: A surgical shaft assembly includes a slip ring assembly. The slip ring assembly has a first connector, a first conductor mounted on the first connector, and a first water-proof insulative layer on the first conductor. The slip ring assembly has a second connector rotatable relative to the first connector, a second conductor mounted on the second connector, and a second water-proof insulative layer on the second conductor. The slip ring assembly also has a dielectric layer located between the first water-proof insulative layer and the second water-proof insulative layer. The first conductor and the second conductor are configured to form a capacitive channel therebetween.

Abstract: Various surgical hubs are disclosed. A surgical hub comprises a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to: receive a first self-describing data packet from a first data source, the first self-describing data packet comprising a first preamble, a first data payload, a source of the first data payload, and a first encryption certificate, wherein the first preamble defines the first data payload and the first encryption certificate verifies the authenticity of the first data packet; parse the received first preamble; and interpret the first data payload based on the first preamble.

Abstract: Various exemplary methods, systems, and devices for controlling electrosurgical tools are provided. In exemplary embodiments of methods, systems, and devices provided herein, a control system can be configured to monitor an electrical parameter during end effector closure, e.g., as jaws of an end effector of an electrosurgical tool move from an open position to a closed position. In response to the electrical parameter dropping to a predetermined minimum parameter threshold, the control system can be configured to cause the end effector to open.

Abstract: A motorized surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a displacement member, a motor coupled to the displacement member, the motor operable to translate the displacement member, a control circuit coupled to the motor, and a position sensor coupled to the control circuit. The control circuit is configured to receive a position output of the position sensor indicative of at least one position of the displacement member and control velocity of the motor to translate the displacement member at a plurality of velocities corresponding to the position output. Each of the plurality of velocities is maintained in a predetermined zone.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a shaft, an end effector extending distally from the shaft, and a housing extending proximally from the shaft. The housing includes a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate the end effector, and a power source configured to supply power to the surgical instrument, wherein the power source includes a casing, a data storage unit, and a deactivation mechanism configured to interrupt access to data stored in the data storage unit. In addition, the power source includes a battery pack and a deactivation mechanism configured to deactivate the battery pack if the casing is breached.
