Abstract: The teachings herein relate to devices for insertion into a cavity, opening or other passageway that requires the bending of the device to conform to a curved or even tortuous shape of the path. The devices include axial support components for translating forces for moving the device forward in the path. The axial support components preferably include adjacent components capable of rocking for tilting the device in one or more directions. The device preferably includes one or more lateral support components for limiting any lateral motion of an axial support component relative to an adjacent axial support component.

Abstract: A probe includes a probe distal end body, a vibration transmission body and a heat dissipation unit. The probe distal end body includes a first electrode. The vibration transmission body is arranged to a proximal end of the probe distal end body. The vibration transmission body transmits ultrasonic vibration generated by an ultrasonic transducer to the probe distal end body, and transmits current to the first electrode. An interior surface of the probe distal end body and an interior surface of the vibration transmission body define an interior space. The heat dissipation unit dissipates heat generated at the probe distal end body, wherein at least a portion of the heat dissipation unit is arranged in the interior space defined by the probe distal end body and the vibration transmission body. A treatment instrument includes the probe and an end effector including a second electrode.

Abstract: A laparoscopic forceps comprising a handpiece including a distal end portion; a tubular member protruding from the distal end portion of the handpiece, the tubular member having a distal end, a pair of jaws having legs that are disposed within the tubular member and partially protruding from the distal end of the tubular member, the pair of jaws and the tubular member being movable relative to each other in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the tubular member; wherein each of the pair of jaws has an arcuate section, and the pair of jaws are closable by advancing the tubular member over the arcuate section of the jaws; and an operable mechanism for creating relative motion between the pair of jaws and the tubular member along a direction parallel to the axis of the tubular member, wherein at the distal end portion of the tubular member there is a profile shape that is non-circular.

Abstract: A medical device for capturing one or more stone fragments includes a sheath having a proximal end and a distal end, a handle at the proximal end of the sheath, and a basket operable with the handle. The basket includes a plurality of wires that capture the stone fragments and has a collapsed configuration when the basket is positioned within the sheath and an expanded configuration when the basket is positioned beyond the distal end of the sheath. The medical device further includes an indicator that communicates to an operator of the medical device that the size of the stone fragments exceeds a predetermined limit and a release mechanism that releases the stone fragments from the plurality of wires when the size of the stone fragments exceeds the predetermined limit. The plurality of wires are able to reset into an operable position after releasing the stone fragments.

Abstract: A surgical locator circuit identifies a surgical target such as a kidney stone by disposing an emitter such as a magnetic source behind or adjacent the surgical target, and employing the circuit to identify an axis to the emitter, thus defining an axis or path to the surgical target. An array of sensors arranged in an equidistant, coplanar arrangement each senses a signal indicative of a distance to the emitter. A magneto resistor sensor generates a variable resistance is responsive to the distance to a magnetic coil emitting a magnetic field. An equal signal from each of the coplanar sensors indicates positioning on an axis passing through a point central to the sensors and orthogonal to the plane. A fixed element and signal conditioner augments and normalizes the signal received from each of the sensors to accommodate subtle differences in magneto resistive response among the plurality of sensors.

Abstract: An apparatus for fragmenting a stone includes an endoscope, a laser fiber, a sheath and a detection feedback system. The endoscope includes a working channel. The working channel is configured to have a retrieval basket inserted therethrough. The sheath may include a first lumen and a second lumen. A first one of the lumen is connected to the endoscope with a shaft of the endoscope extending through the first lumen. A second one of the lumen is spaced from the shaft of the endoscope providing a channel proximate an exterior side of the shaft. The second lumen has the laser fiber inserted therethrough. The detection feedback system is configured to deliver a low energy check pulse from the laser fiber and detect a response, and configured to at least partially control delivery of a high energy laser pulse from the laser fiber to cause the stone to fragment.
