Abstract: A method of generating foveated rendering using temporal multiplexing includes generating a first spatial profile for an FOV by dividing the FOV into a first foveated zone and a first peripheral zone. The first foveated zone will be rendered at a first pixel resolution, and the first peripheral zone will be rendered at a second pixel resolution lower than the first pixel resolution. The method further includes generating a second spatial profile for the FOV by dividing the FOV into a second foveated zone and a second peripheral zone, the second foveated zone being spatially offset from the first foveated zone. The second foveated zone and the second peripheral zone will be rendered at the first pixel resolution and the second pixel resolution, respectively. The method further includes multiplexing the first spatial profile and the second spatial profile temporally in a sequence of frames.

Abstract: Head-mounted display systems with power saving functionality are disclosed. The systems can include a frame configured to be supported on the head of the user. The systems can also include a head-mounted display disposed on the frame, one or more sensors, and processing electronics in communication with the display and the one or more sensors. In some implementations, the processing electronics can be configured to cause the system to reduce power of one or more components in response to at least in part on a determination that the frame is in a certain position (e.g., upside-down or on top of the head of the user). In some implementations, the processing electronics can be configured to cause the system to reduce power of one or more components in response to at least in part on a determination that the frame has been stationary for at least a threshold period of time.

Abstract: A virtual or augmented reality display system that controls a display using control information included with the virtual or augmented reality imagery that is intended to be shown on the display. The control information can be used to specify one of multiple possible display depth planes. The control information can also specify pixel shifts within a given depth plane or between depth planes. The system can also enhance head pose measurements from a sensor by using gain factors which vary based upon the user's head pose position within a physiological range of movement.

The image processing can further include determining one or more virtual image content locations in the environment that correspond to a location where renderable virtual image content appears to a user when the location appears in the display and comparing the one or more virtual image content locations in the environment with a viewing zone.
