Abstract: A Location Management Component (LMC) may be included in a gNB and connected to a gNB Central Unit (gNB-CU). The gNB-CU receives location related messages from any of (i) a UE via a gNB Distributed Units (gNB-DU), (ii) another gNB via an Xn interface, or (iii) a core network entity (e.g. AMF) via an NG interface. These messages can be transported in container messages (e.g., an RRC container for LPP messages sent to or received from a UE; an NGAP container for messages sent to or received from an AMF, or an XnAP container for messages sent to or received from another gNB). The gNB-CU removes the location related messages from the container messages and forwards them to an LMC using F1-AP container messages. Location related messages sent from an LMC to other entities are transported in a reverse manner through a gNB-CU using corresponding container messages.

In one example, a method comprises: receiving, by a mobile device, a radio beam, the radio beam being a directional beam that propagates along an angle of departure with respect to an antenna that transmits the radio beam; identifying, by the mobile device, at least one of: the radio beam or a base station that operates the antenna; determining, by the mobile device, a position of the mobile device based on identifying at least one of the radio beam or the antenna of the base station; and outputting, by the mobile device, the position of the mobile device.

Abstract: Techniques for supporting positioning for a terminal (sometimes referred to herein as a target device) in a wireless network are described. In an aspect, positioning for a target device includes transmitting a Request Assistance Data message to a location server, the Request Assistance Data message indicating at least one positioning method from a plurality of supported positioning methods. The Request Assistance Data message comprises common parameters that are applicable to all positioning methods indicated in the Request Assistance Data message. The common parameters comprise a serving cell identifier. Positioning for the target device further includes receiving assistance data sent in response to the Request Assistance Data message, and performing positioning based on the received assistance data.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods, devices, and systems for beam group reporting for positioning in new radio (NR) wireless communications systems. In some wireless communications systems, multiple PRS resources, e.g., a beam group, received by a user equipment (UE) from the same network entity may be used to produce a combined Time of Arrival (TOA) measurement for the reference or target to derive an Reference Signal Time Difference (RSTD) estimate. The UE provides to a network entity an indication of the PRS resources in the beam group, which may be specifically or generally identified. Additionally, parameters associated with the beam group are provided, such as a relative quality of the TOA measurement for each PRS resource in the subset, a spread of the TOA measurements in the subset, a relative signal strength of each PRS resource in the subset, or a spread of the signal strength in the subset.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining a distance (or range) between a first wireless entity and a second wireless entity. In an aspect, the first wireless entity transmits a first positioning reference signaling (PRS) signal to the second wireless entity at a first time, where the first PRS signal is received by the second wireless entity at a second time, and receives a second PRS signal from the second wireless entity at a third time, where the second PRS signal is transmitted by the second wireless entity at a fourth time. The first wireless entity enables the distance to be determined by a location computing entity, for example, by a location server, based on the first, second, third, and fourth times. The first wireless entity may be a mobile device or a base station and the second wireless entity may be the other of the mobile device or base station.

In an aspect, a location server receives a first propagation time measurement and a first plurality of OTDOA RSTD measurements from a first UE at a first time, receives a second propagation time measurement and a second plurality of OTDOA RSTD measurements from a second UE at a second time, determines at least one real-time difference between a pair of base stations based on the first and second propagation time measurements and the first and second pluralities of OTDOA RSTD measurements, wherein the pair of base stations is associated with the first and second pluralities of OTDOA RSTD measurements, receives a third plurality of OTDOA RSTD measurements from a third UE at a third time, and determines a position of the third UE based at least in part on the at least one real-time difference between the pair of base stations.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining round-trip times (RTTs) between a user equipment (UE) and multiple base stations. In an aspect, the UE transmits an RTT measurement signal whose arrival time is measured by each of the base stations, and each of the base stations returns an RTT response signal whose arrival times are measured by the UE. In another aspect, the base stations each transmit an RTT measurement signal and the UE returns an RTT response signal. The receiver of the RTT measurement signal may include the measured arrival time in a payload of the RTT Response signal. Alternatively, the measured arrival time(s) of the RTT Measurement signal(s) and the transmission time(s) of the RTT Response signal(s) are sent in a separate message. The RTT signals can be wideband signals using low reuse resources.

Abstract: Disclosed embodiments pertain to the obtaining and utilization of Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA) assistance data. Cell timing information obtained based on measurements by a Mobile Station (MS) of neighbor cells may comprise cell timing offsets of the neighbor cells relative to a serving cell for the MS. OTDOA assistance data may be generated, where the OTDOA assistance data may comprise an OTDOA assistance data reference cell and a cell timing offset between the serving cell and an OTDOA assistance data reference cell, the reference cell being selected based on the received neighbor cell measurements. Embodiments disclosed also pertain to methods on an MS for performing measurements of neighbor cells comprising cell timing information for neighbor cells by requesting idle periods with a desired length from a base station to perform the measurements, and performing the requested measurements upon receiving confirmation that the idle periods have been configured.
