Abstract:
In a hierarchical data storage system that supplies data, on request, from a library apparatus in which the data are stored on removable media and from a high-speed cache device, the requests are analyzed to select the most frequently requested data and predict the system's least busy periods. During each predicted least busy period, data are copied from the library apparatus to the cache device, if necessary, so that all of the selected most-frequently-requested data are stored in the cache device. Data are not transferred from the library apparatus to the cache device at other times, thereby avoiding unnecessary cache replacements and improving the efficiency with which requests can be served.

A paper calendering apparatus comprises a nip section for advancing paper sheets formed by at least a pair of rollers, one of which is a metal roller and the other of which is a resilient roller or a metal roller, wherein a gap of equal spacing is formed along the entire width of the roller face at the nip section of the pair of rollers, and is set to less than the thickness of the paper sheet to be finished.

Disclosed is a high strength spring steel consisting of, in weight percentage, 0.50 to 0.70% C, 1.00 to 2.50% Si, 0.30 to 1.20% Mn, 0.80 to less than 1.20% Cr, 0.05 to 0.3% Mo, 0.05 to 0.30% V, 0.01 to 0.30% Nb, 0.005 to 0.100% Al and the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities. The steel of the present invention has a high hardness coupled with high toughness and is very useful, especially for springs used in suspension devices or other various industrial machines.

On a parallel processing system by an OS for single processors which operates, on a multiprocessor, an OS for single processors and an existing application to realize parallel processing by the multiprocessor with respect to the application, each processor includes a communication proxy unit which transfers data between tasks spreading over the processors by proxy and the communication proxy unit on a processor in which a task on a transmission side operates holds information about an address, on a processor, of a task on a reception side to receive data transferred from the task on the transmission side as proxy for the task on the reception side.

I-frames are extracted from a normal play stream in an extract section (12), coding parameters and control parameters, such as VBV delay, related to a decoder buffer are modified for trick play in an I-frame picture data conversion processor (15), repeat pictures that display the same image content as the I-frames are generated and added following the I-frames in a repeat picture adder (16), and the transfer rate is controlled in a picture data size controller (17). This solves the problem that when trick play is executed between a server and a terminal on a network, if only I-frames are used the necessary network bandwidth may increase, a buffer may fail in the decoder that reproduces the trick play stream, and the reproduced video image may be disrupted.

A container capable of transferring molten metal from a factory that produces a molten metals such as molten aluminum alloys and so on to a factory that uses the molten metal while the molten metal being stored therein and supplying the molten metal to a use point using the pressure difference. The container comprises a frame 1a and a lining 2 having a passage for flowing the molten metal therein. The passage 34 is being provided at an inside of the frame and at least a part thereof is being surrounded by a member restricting a flow of a gas. The pipe 34 is, for example, made of a metal and inside thereof has a lining layer 34b formed with a refractory member. The pipe 34 may be structured with a ceramics. As such structure being adopted, even when a crack and the like is formed in the lining 2 of the container, the flow of a gas is shut off, resulting in stable supply of the molten metal.
