Abstract:
A coal-gas fuel composition, for use in furnaces and boilers which have been converted from oil or coal to natural gas, an apparatus and a method for burning said composition are disclosed. Conversions of oil or coal designed boilers to natural gas for environmental compliance can lead to an inbalance between radiative and convective heat transfer in the boiler. Co-firing natural gas with specially processed coal slurries can enhance the infrared radiation from the natural gas flame and help restore the balance intended in the original boiler design, without greatly decreasing the environmental performance of the boiler or furnace. Disclosed is a fuel composition comprising optimal ranges and proportions of constituent fuels, including a slurry comprising about 35% micronized additive, such as coal, and 65% No. 2 fuel oil.
Abstract:
A method is shown for disposing of hazardous waste material without utilizing landfill or bulk incineration. The hazardous waste material is first fed to a shredder for shredding the waste material to pieces of a range of predetermined sizes. The solid hazardous waste material is intermixed with an inlet stream of recycled flammable fuel. The shredded material and combined fuel is then transported by means of a screw conveyor to a dissolving tank, the dissolving tank being provided with a mechanical agitator for agitating the shredded material and combined fuel to produce a homogeneous, flammable mixture. The contents of the dissolving tank are passes to a storage tank once a homogeneous, flammable mixture is achieved.
Abstract:
An improved process is described for agglomeration beneficiation of ground coal in which undiluted heavy oil or bitumen is used as the agglomerating vehicle. The ground cell, water and heavy oil or bitumen are mixed at an elevated temperature sufficient to lower the viscosity of the heavy oil or bitumen to a level permitting easy mixing and at an elevated pressure sufficiently high to prevent boiling of the water. This mixing causes agglomeration of the carbonaceous solids with the heavy oil or bitumen and the agglomerates obtained are separated from the tailings containing aqueous medium and inorganic solids. The separated agglomerates are preferably used with additional heavy oil or bitumen to form a slurry feedstock for a coprocessing unit. This provides a very efficient total process since the coal agglomeration beneficiation uses a portion of the same heavy oil or bitumen feedstock which is used for coprocessing and no additional hydrocarbon diluent is required.

Low rank coals, waste coals and peat are refined by hydrodisproportionation to produce a slate of co-products by heating these materials in the presence of hydrogen donor rich reducing atmosphere and quenching the reaction vapor produced. The slate of co-products includes a fluidic, combustible non-polluting liquid/solid transportable fuel system derived in substantial part from said hydrodisproportionation.
Abstract:
An improved low sulfur and ash pumpable fuel composition is provided comprised of a mixture of carbon black in fuel oil dispersed in an aqueous continuous phase, said mixture comprising from about 50 to about 80 weight percent of said fuel composition and said carbon black being present in said fuel composition in an amount of at least about 20 percent by weight. A method for the production of the noted fuel composition is also provided.

A method and apparatus fluidizes solid deposits of coal tar sludge, such as coal tar decanter sludge or coal tar tank sludge to a relatively homogeneous mixture of solids dispersed in liquid. The coal tar decanter sludge received from the coke oven, including approximately 10 to 50% by weight coal and coke solids, is conveyed into a sludge mixing vessel where it is deposited onto a liquid-permeable support member or screen having a predetermined maximum screen size. A suitable coal tar solvent in the sludge mixing vessel is heated to a temperature sufficient to partially solubilize and reduce the viscosity of the coal tar portion of the coal tar decanter sludge to provide a pumpable dispersion of solids dispersed in a diluted coal tar mixture. Agglomerates of coal and coke solids held together with coal tar fall through the screen when sufficient coal tar has solubilized and the solid agglomerates then are reduced in size for recirculation to the sludge mixing vessel. The diluted coal tar mixture is pumped to recirculate it to the sludge mixing vessel after impacting and shearing the solid agglomerates to reduce the solids particle size.

A process is disclosed for stabilizing the viscosity of coal derived materials such as an SRC product by adding up to 5.0% by weight of a light volatile phenolic viscosity repressor. The viscosity will remain stabilized for a period of time of up to 4 months.

A method is described for preparing a solid fuel in the form of a coal/liquid slurry for use in small furnaces. The fuel has a relatively uniform heating value of 10,000 to 14,000 Btu per pound and is prepared by crushing and grinding coal to less than 200 mesh, blending the coal fines with additives for SO.sub.x abatement, for ignition and oxidation promotion, and ash modifiers to improve the combustion quality of the fuel. The blended coal mixture is wetted with water and then slurried with oil, water or alcohol to form a thick slurry. The thick slurry is stabilized by proper selective of surfactants, polymers and other additives by way of interparticle bonding or bridging to provide a pumpable solid fuel that is stable in storage.

A process for the production of beneficiated coal and coal slurries having low ash, and sulfur involving admixing coal in an aqueous medium with a surface treating admixture comprising a polymerizable monomer, polymerization catalyst and a liquid organic carrier thereby rendering said coal highly hydrophobic and oleophilic. The resultant beneficiated coal product is formed into coal slurries, such as coal-oil mixtures.
