    Abstract: This invention relates to optical delay lines, particularly to modifying an optical signal passing through an optical delay line. A method of applying a Doppler shift to an optical signal as it passes through an optical delay line is provided, the method comprising the step of progressively altering a property of the optical delay line during passage of the optical signal therethrough such that the time taken for the optical signal to pass therethrough is progressively lengthened or progressively shortened for successive portions of the optical signal. In addition, an optical delay line is provided that may be used in accordance with the above method.

    Abstract: The present invention provides methods, systems, and apparatus of improved fiber-based optical parametric oscillators (FOPOs). These oscillators can be used in the creation of short pulsed laser radiation, which are useful in numerous applications, such as characterization of materials and molecules. A relationship between fiber length and performance is realized, where shorter lengths counterintuitively provide greater power and width of output bands. This relationship is used to develop improved FOPOs. For example, fibers of 10 cm or less may be used to obtain superior performance in terms of wavelength tunability (e.g. bandwidth of 200 nm and greater) and output power (e.g. pulse power of 1 nJ). Other realized relationships between length and wavelength position of output bands are also used to select the wavelength range output from the FOPO. The diameter of the fiber may be selected to provide positioning (e.g. a centering) of the range of attainable output wavelengths.

    Abstract: There is provided a broadly tunable laser beam generator serving as a laser beam source which utilizes a nonlinear optical effect of a silica (glass) fiber and which is broadly tunable in the near-infrared region, having ultra-broad tunability which has not been easily achieved by known tunable lasers, and generating coherent light which can be continuously swept over the entire wavelength region with a simple mechanical operation of a single wavelength selecting element and which is emitted in a constant direction independent of its wavelength.The laser beam source which utilizes a nonlinear optical effect of a silica optical fiber (8) and which is broadly tunable in the near-infrared region has ultra-broad tunability and generates coherent light which can be continuously swept over the entire wavelength region with a single wavelength selecting element (10).

More specifically, the invention relates to a filter and its construction, the filter including a support, first and second mounts at spaced locations on the support, an optical fiber having first and second mounted portions secured to the first and second mounts respectively and a filtering section between the first and second mounted portions, a signal generator operable to generate a periodic signal, and an electro-acoustic transducer having a terminal connected to the signal generator and an actuating portion, the electric signal causing vibration of the actuating portion, and the actuating portion being connected to the filtering section so that the vibration generates a transverse wave traveling along the filtering section. The filter has an improved damper to more effectively dampen waves traveling along the filtering section.
