Abstract:
A floating closure seal usable in conjunction with a tapered plug in the conical well of a plug valve body. Forming the seal is an elastomeric composition generally enclosing an arcuate span of a relatively thin, flexible base material. On the backside facing a recess in the supporting plug, the seal includes localized elastomeric projections engaging the recess wall. The projections act to distend the seal on its front side into diametral conformity with the proximate body well surface for effecting a sealing relation therewith.
Abstract:
Two oil and gas zones are produced by allowing production from each zone to drain to separate chambers where production from each zone is pumped by a separate pump; the outputs from the separate pumps are commingled and conducted to the earth''s surface. A separate gas vent is provided for each zone to the earth''s surface.
Abstract:
A plastic gauge casing formed of separate front and rear cuplike interfitting sections. Concentrically arranged annular skirts on a first section define an annular recess therebetween. In assembly, an annular skirt on the second section is telescopically received in the recess contiguously in an interleaved relation with skirts of the first section. Mutually engageable radial tabs on opposite facing skirts provide an interlock against pullout.
Abstract:
The addition or removal of individual drill rods from the drill column of a raise drilling system is facilitated by a drill rod handling apparatus. The drill rod handling apparatus is attached to the support frame of the raise drill and includes arm means for moving individual drill rods into and out of the uppermost position in the drill column. Gripping elements are connected to the arm means for grasping and retaining an individual drill rod as it is being moved into and out of the drill column. The gripping elements include mechanical locking means for locking the gripping elements when the gripping elements are grasping and retaining an individual drill rod. A shock absorber means is connected to the arm means for absorbing the shock produced by vertical movement of an individual drill rod when the drill rod is contacted and engaged by the drill head of the raise drill.
Abstract:
The amplified pulses from a radioactivity detector are coupled to a discriminator and via a 400 nanosecond delay line to the inputs of three linear gates. The discriminator is AND gated with a clock pulse and a J-K flip-flop. A scale of four and a 1 of 4 decoder and a single shot multivibrator are driven by the AND gate output. The single shot output and the decoder outputs are AND gated to control the linear gates. In an alternative embodiment, the linear gates and delay lines are replaced with charge and hold, delay and interrogate circuits.
Abstract:
A butterfly valve in which the vane seat is formed of a corrosion resistant stainless steel ring compressedly interlocked axially onto the valve body.
Abstract:
A hopper for deverting residue and cuttings from the boring machine when drilling upward. The hopper includes a main cylindrical body open at both ends. Two symmetrical deflection elements are pivotably connected to the main body of the hopper. A plate opposite the pins provides support for the deflection elements and allows them to slide to provide adjustment of the size of the central opening.
Abstract:
The rate of penetration of a drill bit and associated drill string used in drilling oil and gas wells is monitored and the resulting output signal activates an alarm whenever the rate of penetration exceeds a predetermined level. The depth of penetration is also monitored during the time that the rate of penetration is excessive and when the depth interval during such time exceeds a given number of feet, a second alarm is sounded. When the depth interval during the excessive rate of penetration is greater than a second predetermined number of feet, a signal is sent to the drawworks which takes the weight off the bit. Means are also provided for resetting the depth counting mechanisms whenever either of the depth interval circuits have counted to less than their predetermined capacity whenever the rate of penetration has diminished to a point which is less than the predetermined excessive level. In an alternative embodiment, predetermined time intervals are used instead of depth intervals.
Abstract:
Rotary, compressive and tensile forces are transmitted through a replaceable chuck to a rotary drill string to bore a large diameter hole by initially drilling a small diameter hole and subsequently enlarging the small diameter hole into the desired large diameter hole with a reaming operation. The drill string is rotated with rotary drilling equipment mounted upon a movable carriage. The uppermost drill rod of the drill string is connected to the main drive spindle of the rotary drilling equipment by the replaceable chuck. A pair of cap screws and a clamp ring allow the replaceable chuck to be easily and quickly removed from the main drive spindle. Rotary force from the main drive spindle is transmitted to the replaceable chuck by a square recess on the main drive spindle that mates with a raised square on the replaceable chuck. The replaceable chuck is provided with an axial floating action for make up and break out of the threaded connection between the drill stem and the replaceable chuck. A register pilot on the replaceable chuck mates with a pilot recess on the main drive spindle to provide alignment.
Abstract:
The amplified pulses from a radioactivity detector are coupled through a delay line to a linear gate. The amplified pulses from the detector are also connected to a discriminator. The output of the discriminator is AND gated in a logical gate with a clock pulse which is synchronized with a high energy neutron source. The AND gate triggers a single shot multivibrator which in turn triggers the linear gate. The delay line allows for the time required for the detector pulse to rise to the discriminator threshold and for the propagation delay in the logic circuitry. The linear gate opens before the arrival of the detector pulse and closes after it passes through. In this embodiment, any detector pulse having the necessary discriminator level occuring within the clock pulse interval passes through the linear gate as a full width pulse. In an alternative embodiment, a J-K flip-flop circuit is triggered by the trailing edge of the single shot multivibrator to disable the AND gate, thus causing the linear gate to pass only the first detected pulse having the necessary discriminator level.
