Abstract: A photoacoustic detection system (20) includes a detector (22) that has a chamber (24), a pulsed light source (26), piezoelectric tuning forks (28), and a photosensor (30). The chamber has an inlet and an outlet for flow of an analyte. The pulsed light source is adjacent the chamber and is operable to emit a light beam along a path through the chamber. The tuning forks are arranged along the path, and each of the tuning forks is operable to emit first sensor signals. The photosensor is arranged along the path and is operable to emit second sensor signals. A controller (38) is connected to receive the first and second sensor signals. The controller is configured to determine whether a target species is present in the analyte based on the first sensor signals and determine whether the target species is present in the analyte based on the second sensor signals.

Abstract: In a system for measuring a fire suppressant or fire suppression propellant quantity, the system comprising: a base (102); a top plate (106) positioned to support a tank (22) of said fire suppressant or fire suppression propellant; a plurality of springs (112) positioned between the top plate and the base to support the top plate atop the base, the plurality of springs positioned to support the top plate along a range of motion between an extended condition and a retracted condition; a first magnetic member (142) mounted to the base; a second magnetic member (140) mounted to the top plate so that a spacing between the first magnetic member and the second magnetic member decreases as the top plate moves from the extended condition to the retracted condition. At least one of the first magnetic member and the second magnetic member is a permanent magnet. A magnetic field sensor (160) is positioned to detect changes in a magnetic field associated with changes in said spacing.

Abstract: A detector assembly for a duct of a heating ventilation and air conditioning system includes an outer housing having at least one through hole formed therein, an inner sampling support receivable within a hollow interior of the outer housing, and at least one detector mounted to the inner sampling support. The at least one detector is axially aligned with the at least one through hole when the inner sampling support is installed within the hollow interior of the outer housing. The at least one detector is operable to sample air within the duct to detect a hazardous condition.

Abstract: An illustrative example monitoring device includes a plurality of radiation sources that respectively emit a different type of radiation. At least one radiation detector is situated to detect radiation emitted the radiation sources and reflected off airborne particles. The radiation detector has a first sensitivity configured for detecting a concentration of the particles within a first range and a second sensitivity configured for detecting a concentration of the particles within a second, different range. A processor is configured to determine a ratio of the types of detected radiation, a type of the particles reflecting the detected radiation based on the ratio, and the concentration of the particles reflecting the detected radiation based on the first or second sensitivity.

Abstract: A detection system includes a host detection system that has at least one primary hazard detector and a controller connected for communication with the at least one primary hazard detector. At least one portable auxiliary hazard detector can be temporarily introduced in a vicinity of the host detection system and link with the controller of the host detection system to provide additional detection capability. The portable auxiliary hazard detector has at least one light source that can emit a light beam, and at least one photosensor that is operable to emit sensor signals responsive to interaction of the light beam with an analyte.
