Abstract:
A method and system for providing a user interface of a mobile communication terminal. The method includes displaying, on an active display, a first view having an application zone and a control zone, the control zone having a plurality of control items, one control item of the plurality of control items being in focus, and the application zone being a display area for a first application, as a response to a first input, shifting focus along a first direction from a focused control item being in focus prior to the first input being effected, to a control item being displayed along the first direction from the focused control item, and as a response to a second input, running software code associated with a control item being in focus when the second input is effected. A corresponding mobile communication terminal and computer program product are also presented.
Abstract:
A sensing module positioned about an optical fiber cable having a long axis. The optical fiber includes a core that transmits light through the optical fiber cable. The sensing module includes a first short-period fiber grating positioned about the core. A second short-period fiber grating is positioned about the core and at a distance along the long axis with respect to the first short-period fiber grating. At least one of a long-aperiod fiber grating and a long-period fiber grating is positioned between the first short-period fiber grating and the second short-period fiber grating. A fiber cladding is positioned around the long-period grating and/or the long-aperiod grating of the sensing module. A sensing skin is positioned about the fiber cladding and includes a chemical gas active material.
Abstract:
A safety system for a compartment of a vehicle includes an occupant sensor for sensing an occupant within the compartment of the vehicle, a vehicle-based control, and a wireless transmitter of the vehicle. The control is responsive to the occupant sensor. The control controls transmission by the wireless transmitter. The wireless transmitter may transmit to a receiver located external of the vehicle upon detection by the occupant sensor of the presence of an occupant within the compartment of the vehicle.
Abstract:
In accordance with one exemplary embodiment the invention provides a multi-parameter fiber optic sensing system with an aperiodic sapphire fiber grating as sensing element for simultaneous temperature, strain, NOx, CO, O2 and H2 gas detection. The exemplary sensing system includes an aperiodic fiber grating with an alternative refractive index modulation for such multi-function sensing and determination. Fabrication of such quasiperiodic grating structures can be made with point-by-point UV laser inscribing, diamond saw micromachining, and phase mask-based coating and chemical etching methods. In the exemplary embodiment, simultaneous detections on multi-parameter can be distributed, but not limited, in gas/steam turbine exhaust, in combustion and compressor, and in coal fired boilers etc. Advantageously, the mapping of multiple parameters such as temperature, strain, and gas using sapphire aperiodic gratings improves control and optimization of such systems directed to improve efficiency and output and reduce emissions.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A magnetic boat docking system includes an elongated pole having a handle end and a working end and a docking line having a magnetic member attached thereto. The pole has a magnet for attracting the magnetic member of the docking line where the magnet is located adjacent the working end of the pole. The pole also has a hook adapted to aid in grasping the docking line and a rod slidably extending within the pole with the magnet attached thereto in order to retract the magnet within the pole to release the line.
Abstract:
A multiwell plate is described herein that can be used in cell-based applications and is made from a plastic upper plate which forms the sidewalls of one or more wells and a glass lower plate which forms the bottom walls of the wells. The plastic upper plate and glass lower plate are attached and bound to one another by a cationically photocured adhesive. A preferred cationically photcured adhesive includes: (1) one or more photocationally polymerizable epoxy and/or oxetane functional resins; (2) a low fluorescing cationic photoinitiator; and (3) a low fluorescing photosensitizer if the cationic photoinitiator does not have an adequate absorption at a wavelength >280 nm to initiate cure. Also described herein is a method for making such multiwell plates.
Abstract:
An aquatic device for skimming across the surface of a body of water is provided. The device includes a centrally located body section, a bridge extending from the body section, a grip handle having an outer side wall, which extends from the bridge and is located about the periphery of the device and a convex bottom surface. The body may be curved over its entire upper surface or may be flat across its upper surface and may include a downwardly and outwardly ramped perimeter. The bridge is thin enough to allow bending. The grip handle may be weighted for stability purposes and is designed to be grasped by a hand. The bottom surface is convex and meets the outer side wall at a sharp angle. The outer side wall is also convex. The device is constructed from materials such that it is heavy enough to overcome lift but light enough that it does not sink. The device may be made from one material having the required density or from two or more materials which act together to have the necessary density.
